Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 11 notes)

Tasted by JohnBlueLabel on 1/1/2010 & rated 93 points: It's been nearly 2 years since I tasted my first bottle of this, and that has made quite a bit of difference. While the aromatics and flavor profile are pretty much the same as my previous note, this wine has mellowed and smoothed out. The tannins, while still firm, are more subdued, leaving the finish more pleasing. It's no wonder why these wines are not released when younger, they clearly need a lot more time to evolve. Wish I had more! (210 views)
Tasted by Winevestor on 10/4/2009 & rated 97 points: Wonderful wine. If you don't like big structured wine with a lot of fruit don't go for this. However for me it still had the distinctive Valpolicella taste although significantly amped up. Big brooding nose, leather, smooth, and ripe plums. On the palate, well integrated desipite the high alcolhol (15%), raisiny and silky. If you like your wines young it is drinking well, but it is a monster and has at least a decade to run. Fascinated now to see what the Amarone can possibly taste like! (624 views)
Tasted by wcacern on 8/21/2009 & rated 94 points: Great deep dark color. Superb nose of dark ripe fruit, loads of plum, fig, hints of apricot stew, earthy blackberries, surrounded by forest floor, cedar planks, lavish oak and vanilla and subtle baking spice. Rich, dense, concentrated, yet silky and velvety smooth. Super ripe, big powerful style but balanced by a nice tartness from the fruit and well structured with its nicely polished tannins. Worth every cent. Wow! (695 views)
Tasted by il_diavolo on 5/12/2009 & rated 92 points: concentrated and rich - can see why parallels to aussie wines are made but for me this oozes so much more class. love or hate the style you know what you are getting with dal forno and he always delivers. (769 views)
Tasted by abh on 9/28/2008: Tasted at The Sampler. I absolutely hated this. Syrupy, insufficient acid and I swear a weird banana note. The concentration and quality of the wine making are quite obvious so maybe my issue is really just with style. I don't have meaningful comparison points but I would never have guessed this was an Italian wine in a million years. (1013 views)
Tasted by espia on 6/13/2008 & rated 93 points: As good and rich as any Amarone. Probably needs more time. Strong aromas of fig jam and some peachy characteristics that I've also noticed in Priorats and good Montepulciano. Think I preferred Quintarelli's 1997 Ca' del Merlo (1093 views)
Tasted by canan on 2/2/2008: Had great expectations and wasn't disappointed :-)
A very explosive and complex nose with a multitude of layers, sweet plum/fig, black pepper and some spices (thyme and rosemary).
The taste is very powerfull and almost heavy, mostly consisting of dark plums and very harsh tannins. After a while it get a little bit of tar and a very flattering spice tone of pepper/thyme.
It is not sweet in any way but instead it has a very nice acidity that balances out the wine very nicely. As usual a very impressive effort from Dal Forno and the bad vintage does not seem to have had any effect. (1097 views)
Tasted by carnyc on 1/5/2008 & rated 95 points: Aromatic and beautiful. Rich and long with great, big tannins; Very young. Outstanding. (1373 views)
Tasted by JohnBlueLabel on 1/5/2008 & rated 90 points: Very dark red/purple color. Fantastically aromatic nose, with black currant, oak, vanilla and a touch of raisin and flowers. Full, rich mouthfeel. Some heat initially on the palate which carries through. Dark but sour fruit, oak, cedar and finishes with a creaminess from the oak, but with firm, Brunello-esque tannins. More tannic and not as smooth and polished as the 99 Quintarelli. (1370 views)
Tasted by cobystilp on 9/13/2007 & rated 92 points: Ordered with NSNG mgmt team at italian restaurtant in NYC. This was a very deep, bright tasting wine. It has a lot of red fruit punch to the beginning. Then it hits you with a cedar box and long finish. The table liked it a lot. Ordered two bottles. (1490 views)
Tasted by TDV on 3/22/2007 & rated 93 points: Armit Italian tasting (Lansdowne Club): Powerful, rich pronounced nose of sweet blackcurrant/cassis and herbs (dill?). Sweet dark fruit on the palate, vanilla from the oak, very full and voluptuous. This seems a little bit confused about its origins to me. The sour twist and the tannic structure bring it round and remind you that you're in Italy - but you can't help feeling it's spent a bit of time in the Barossa. Tim: "a Christian Vieri wine". On reflection i think it's excellent - and just about deserves to be described as unique rather than an Italian wine imitating an Aussie. (1680 views)
