  • No better than the previous bottle last month. Cork stained halfway up. No obvious ullage. Possibly poor storage, possibly too old. Still, a 'premium' Yarra chardonnay at nine years should look better than this.

  • {cork, 13%} Alarmingly dark yellow, even by the standards of decade-old Australian chardonnay. Sure enough, sherried, nutty and aldehydic. Seems like there was something of quality here once; the palate feels like it's still trying, with memories of quality oak, and a hint of grapefruit flavour, although there's something of the over-malo-ed character to it, with a butteriness that still seems to hang in there, even through the flatly oxidative quality of the rest of the wine. Still, this is actually drinkable, although it feels very much "what might have been"; the cork hasn't obviously failed to seal (no seeping); I'd say it's a 'not egregious" example of premature oxidation. It may not entirely be the cork's fault; this was an auction buy of obviously unknown provenance. The other bottle will be interesting, therefore...

  • Lemon and oak noticeable on the nose. On the palate strongly citric: lemon and grapefruit. Strongly acid. Not much oak noticeable on the palate. Too simple for the price.

  • Not highly rated by the critics but a pleasant wine nonetheless. Minerality is its strength. Lack of body is its weakness and a lack of complexity for its high end price. No sign of tiredness but I doubt it will gain complexity now.
