It needed decanting as it was hard as nails when first opened. It must have been in the decanter for close to 2 hours when we started drinking it. There was great balance of fruit and acidity with tannins quite pronounced. Was excellent with pasta with Spring peas, ramps, and morel mushrooms at Colicchio & Sons.
Drank with a 1991 and a 2008. The 1991 seeped through the cork and was bad. This 2001 shined in comparison to the 2008. The extra seven years of aging showed most prominently at the nose, and also in the more musty taste of the wine. The 2001 is drinking very well and the cork showed no sign of age.
