DRC Montrachet Vertical: Utterly stunning and clear WOTN. My last bottle 8 years ago is the reason I chase white Burg, so there were very high expectations here and this bottle did not disappoint. Complexity, depth, drive and a finish that lingered on and on. Amazing.

Opened in Hong Kong. Decanted and enjoyed over several hours.
Even at hour 6, this was still continuing to unfold. Beautiful nutty, popcorn, caramel notes coming through on the nose; rich but with a lovely balancing salinity to go with it. There were hints of sweetness - I even found myself enjoying notes of sweet Riesling or Botrytis - but it was always balanced. There were also flowers coming through, a light floral note that just added to the complexity. An absolutely gorgeous wine and it was a privilege to taste it.
Thanks to Mr. T for the incredible generosity - can't wait to return the favour.

Some Iconic Wines to Wrap Up 2020 (Good Riddance!) (Chez Moi): I've only tasted a DRC Montrachet once, a quick splash from a magnum of an unidentified vintage shared by an effusively generous guest at La Festa del Barolo a few years back. I remember being able to taste that wine hours later, and sometimes believe I can still conjure it up on demand, so I was especially eager to pull a cork on one of my own, though just a 750 in this case. The cork protruded a bit, and was caked with a thick, almost plastic-like chunk of solid white mold, but any apprehensions were quickly allayed by the rich, pure and powerful aromas leaping from the bottle. I happily decanted the wine, admiring the deep golden hue, and left it at cellar temp for 4 hours. When we turned to the wine, there was no doubt this was the wine I remembered so well, with a nose displaying intense, concentrated lemon confiture aromas alongside spicy oak and a touch of mint. More of the same on the palate, incredibly fresh and rich, very oak-dominated, with a viscous, glycerined texture and a finish so long I gave up measuring it. A white wine of such heft, depth and intensity, it was almost too much. This was White Burg on Steroids, sheer class but in a way, too much of everything. In hindsight, that first sip some years ago, and its elusive memories, probably would have sufficed, not that I have any regrets. This is a hedonistic joyride, and a memorable one at that.

(Romanée-Conti Montrachet) The colour is tending towards gold but I'd still describe it as medium lemon yellow. The nose is not obviously fruity, but shows amazing depth - you fall into a bottomless pit of butterscotch, fresh bread and faint vanilla. The nose really set me up for what I expected to be a very fat and powerful wine - I was only half right: the palate is neither fat nor in any way heavy. The very fine acidity carries the lace-like texture into an incredible finish - I had to go away and eat some bread as I could still taste this wine when I was supposed to be tasting the Échézeaux. An almost ethereal experience - I was truly impressed.
