  • Good news first: still alive and kicking!

From my friends cellar, like the Barbera. Thanks for the invite, Gun!

    N. Typical, roses, a bit agy notes (levisticum, lovage), nice cooked fruits, honey/flowers/wax, tarragon, also nuances of roasted beef, very complex, changing, elegant

    T. Very round, cooked fruits again, dark chocolate, roasted hazelnuts, middle long finish with some green notes and well built in tannin.

Ages well, but not another ten years, I would say.

  • Pre-wedding anniversary celebration at Otto Ristorante. The degustation menu deserves a post on its own. But onto the wine...
Poured into narrow decanter and drank over 2 hours. Fine sediments at bottom.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of tarry earth, roses, truffle, sous bois. Tea leaves with more air. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), melt-in-your-mouth medium+ tannins, deceptively full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherries, black cherries, tarry earth, slight truffle and sous bois. Sweet tea leaves with more air as the fruit receded. Long finish.
Very good quality. Drinking well on pop and pour. Drink up. Nearing the end of its evolution. From personal experience visiting the winery and reading what others say about recent vintages of this Barbaresco, it is supposed to be a big oaky modern style. However, this aged example is really quite nice with classic tar and roses and no evidence of obtrusive oak. Could it be that it has aged gracefully and integrating nicely? Or could it be that the modern style is a recent development at the winery?

  • I a very nice spot with several hours of decant, deeply flavored and colored, more dark fruit than red, resolving tannin and long finish. Lovely wine, wish I had more.

  • Delicious, but really wished I had drank it a few years ago.
