 Tasted by Jochems on 10/31/2009 & rated 91 points: Initially it was muted and hollow on the mid palate. After almost a full 24 hours in the bottle it opened up beautifully. Quite different from the last time I had it! But the flavor profile was very similar:
Deep ruby color. Intense aromas of ripe blackcurrant and blackberry and hints of tobacco. Full bodied with lots of ripe fruit and smooth tannins. Long finish.
Should perhaps wait a year or two before I open the next bottle. Drink 2011 - 2014. (310 views)

Drank beautifully from 1st sip, compared favorably to my 97 Banfi Poggio ala Mura. Ellen preferred it the Poggio, due to the slight brett note on the Poggio. Another winner from Dr. Luca San Just. Following trough full bodied with ripe fruit and smooth, layered tannins. Medium-long finish. Well integrated already, slightly more than I expected, still lots of structure left. Drink now -2014.

Quite different in style compared to the '04 and '06 Torrione. This one has much more dark fruit and ripeness. (665 views)

 Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 2/20/2009: Sweet cherry. Nick says lavender. You feel it (or I feel it) more on the second try. Orange peel, lavender. For around $35 I would have to think about it. As time is going on this seems to be gettng better. More orange peel, more freshness, heavy structured. It has been open a couple of hours but is just coming up. (849 views)

 Tasted by kampster on 9/5/2008: Very dark, nearly black. Nose takes a little while to open up but it's worth the wait. Black cherries, menthol and some oakyness.
Medium to full bodied, well integrated tannins. Good acidity.Loads of fruit. The oak influence is there but not over done. Hasn't yet developed terribly complex characteristics but I think that is just a matter of time. If I have to say something negative, it's a bit smooth but still I kept reaching for another glass.
Despite its young age it's drinking very well at the moment. Drink now -2015. (929 views)
 Tasted by slave2thevine on 5/16/2008: This full bodied monster still needs some time (or about 2-3 hours in a decanter). Notes of dark chocolate and black fruit on the nose with light leather notes hiding in the back ground. In the mouth sour cherry, dark chocolate, and cassis dominate the flavor profile. Full bodied on the palate with ripe fruit and layers of tannins. Medium-long finish. A joy to drink now, but will improve over the next years. Drink now - 2015.

This wine has classic sangiovese character. It reminds me a lot of some '97 Brunello. (1127 views)
 Tasted by Dulcie and Aylwin on 3/26/2008: It seems like there is quite a premium to be paid for a couple of extra RP points: $10 - $15 can get you 87s, but here I'm in for nearly $40 to get 91. Way too simplistic an analysis, and actually this wine seems a lot better than just a few points than the run-of-the-mill 87s. Deep inky blackcurrant color looks like it would be a permanent marker. Intense, perfumed complex aroma, sweet and bitter, super-ripe concentrated raspberry, leather and nutmeg, considerable acidity, length and depth. It makes its mark. (1289 views)
 Tasted by kampster on 11/7/2007 & rated 90 points: Very pure expression of sangiovese. I was surprised at how accessible this wine is already. My experience with the 2003 was that of a very harsh wine in it's youth (actually haven't tasted it for a year or so now after that experience). Opened this one out of curiousity and didn't expect to truly enjoy it but I did.
It's a medium bodied effort with a wonderfully zesty acidity. Classical notes of sour cherries and green olives and hints of tobacco and the tannins are smooth and well integrated.
Not a terribly complex wine at this point, but it might evolve with time. The typical sangiovese character makes it ideal as a companion to the italian cuisine. Matched a dish of pasta with eggplant-garlic tomato sauce and parmegiani perfectly.
If you like sangiovese you'll love this one. (1310 views)

The estate "Fattoria Petrolo", with its famous winery and prestigious production of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The property covers 272 hectares (approximately 672 acres) with 31 hectares (over 76 acres) of specialized vineyards, 19 hectares (about 47 acres) of olive trees, and the rest natural plants and forest located at an altitude between 250 to 400 mt (750 to 1200 ft) above sea level and with a terrain of rocky stratifications of Galestro (a clay-like sediment).

The region is known as the Colli Aretini (Aretini hills) which encircle the Monti Chianti, historically known and declared in 1716 by the Archduke of Tuscany as a particularly precious wine and olive-producing region. The Petrolo Winery is part of the medieval fiefdom of "Galatrona" and its tower, built atop roman ruins, still exists. In fact, this is where the name for our Torrione wine comes from. The Winery was acquired by the Bazzocchi family in the 40s and since the middle of the 80s the proprietors have pursued a wine production based exclusively on the highest quality research.


About red wine
SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-veh-zeh"). Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
