Had this shipped to me during a hot month and the capsule broke and the cork was about 1/4 out. Ugh. Decided to cellar it and forget about it. Six months later I popped it open on a whim and it was gorgeous from the outset. No bricking at all. Youthful and berry-forward on the nose and palate. A cool, pleasing acidity with some truffle and cocoa powder notes. Not overly complex but silky, lively, and fun.

Life doesn't get much better than experiencing your favorite Napa producer's first-ever vintage and finding, as expected, it's just as great as later vintages from the 1980s. Are there any American wines from the 1970s and 1980s drinking better today than Dunn HM? Not in my experience. This bottle was singing and still going strong.

had this very special wine at our regular Lenoir dinner - thanks to Brent for hosting and Alex for providing (straight from a cellar in Napa). While not WOTN ('93 Maya won out) this was a stunning example of the longevity of Randy Dunn's wines - still vibrant and well balanced between black fruit, plum and touches of herb on the finish.

Served en magnum. Slightly restricted in the nose. Herbs and cedar notes. More red fruited. Fairly tannic. Rustic. Less fruit on the palate and a bit out of balance to me. Cedar. It gets better with air. Still prominent tannins with time in the glass. 93

Inaugural year?
A huge California Bruiser,
Not the most balanced wine
But plenty of stuffing
And completely alive at 43 years old
