  • Chenin Fest: 28 Loire Chenin Blancs from 1995 - 1997. (Don Rice's.): Showed just as it did a couple of months ago. The wine was a bit too over the top for almost all present, but I warned them that it needed some air for the acidity to come up and balance out the wine, but no one listened. A couple of days later I heard from Don that he watched the bottle evolve and I was correct. Vindication! A deep amber color and incredibly intense and sweet on the palate with lots of honey, apricot jam and tea flavors. Plenty of mineral and botrytis character. I love it and will take whatever bottles my friends may want to part with. A.

  • Chenin Blancs @ the Kravitz (Old Saybrook): At first this came across as syrupy and one-dimensional, although still wonderfully delicious and a wonderful accompaniment to cheese and pate. Thank goodness, however, we put some aside to try later in the evening as this improved remarkably... gaining complexity, nuance, acidity and even some minerality. Although it slimmed down a bit, it was still exuberantly rich and unctuous. This held its own against a 1989 Huet Cuvee Constance, which is high praise indeed. An explosion of flavors on the palate. Still youthful at 30 years of age and I will let my last bottle age until...???

  • A wonderful evening of Chenin. (Chez Kravitz- Old Saybrook): I was thrilled to see this when Marco pulled it out of his bag. I’ve always loved this wine, but I, along with others in my local Chenin group, panicked in the early to mid-aughts when this, the ’97 and the Bise wines, also made by Papin, started to darken in color very quickly. We were concerned that they were aging rapidly. We would later learn that it was just the botrytis making the wine darken and that the wines, were in fact, in fine form. This bottle bore that out. It’s an incredibly sweet wine, extremely honeyed with an intense apricot preserves character that gives the impression of being a bit cloying at first, but previous experience with it has told me to just give it some air as there’s plenty of acidic backbone and, indeed, it did reveal itself with extended airing. Shows some nice mineral notes as well as some earl grey tea. Held it’s own against the ’89 Huet Cuvée Constance and ’89 Foreau Reserve 1ere Trie. Miles to go with this one and I’m kicking myself for not holding on to my stash longer. A.

  • Plenty of tasty treats as Dougherty hosts the Louis/Dressner winemakers- Huet, Foreau, Trimbach, Coche-Dury, Juge, Foillard and more. (Dougherty's.): You live and learn. About ten years ago, I and a few other locals that had these wines as well as the Bise Coteaux du Layons and quarts de Chaume grew alarmed with their seemingly rapid evolution. They color was darkening much quicker than expected, given our experience at that time largely with older Huet and the tasting profile seemed to be advancing faster than it should. As a result, most of us opted to drink these wines sooner, rather and later. Indeed, I think I must've consumed my last Bise wine eight or so years ago. Well, having had a couple of various Bise wines over the past couple of including this one, I'm left to conclude that this is just the normal aging curve for these wines. While a amber color, the wine is perfectly intact. It's as intensely sweet as it was on release with honey and apricot preserves dominating with just a bit of early grey tea and minerality on the back end. In fact, it may be too sweet for some as while there are good acid levels to the wine, the sugar tends to be a bit dominant at this stage. Viscous and mouth filling with a long apricot filled finish. Wish I still had some. Solid A-.
