This wine needs a long decant. On opening it smelled like 'merde'. Very funky. And not the good Brett funk. After it was in the glass for 15 min it started to change for the better. In the mouth, varietal characteristics presented themselves but there was an untamed wildness that is fairly typical to South Africa. No way to mistake this for Bordeaux. Medium finish. On Day 2 the wine was markedly improved but the brambly sauvage was still there, underpinning it all.
Great bottle right now! Very expressive nose with a large variety of aromatic details. Herbs, black and red berries, leather, wet cedar, oppulent flowers and so on. It just kept revealing new notes. A pleasure. Smooth tannins and a gentle but present acidity followed by a medium long aromatic aftertaste and a subtle alcohol. Nobody guessed South Africa and all of us were in southern France. A very fine bottle indeed!
