The 1978 Jaboulet Cornas is amazing, displayed a saturated red-black color and an immense and rich nose of ripe strawberry, graphite and earth. On the palate the wine is thickly-textured, dense, seamless and immensely concentrated, with impeccable balance, with an impressively mineral palate impression. This gives every indication of having at the very least another thirty years in it.

Cornas (28-50, London): Almost opaque, dull beetroot red with the sediment. Sweet-fruited nose, a touch of iron. The sediment gives it some grip. Good acidity, still there, just, but on the downslope. Not as good a a couple of bottles two years ago. Gorgeous nose though, starting to add beef, blood and a touch of spice to the rusty iron. **** nose but (*)**1/2 overall.

Light garnet with a little light bricking. Well evolved bonfire smoke nose with spicy raspberry, tomato ketchup and stinky farmyard aromas - lovely. Plump, spicy and complex with black berries, iron minerality and toasted wood. Still fresh and really enjoyable.

Cork crumbled, contents pretty thin and acidic with some oxidation. Not consumed.
