Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 41 notes)

Tasted by milesdavis on 2/4/2010 & rated 94 points: ungodly good - little on the nose - mouthfeel is extraordinary - smooth as silk - my only bottle, will definitely seek out more (164 views)
Tasted by Normones on 1/9/2010 & rated 92 points: drinking well now. nice smooth cherry. earth. terrific balance. very nice pinot. (184 views)
Tasted by Patas on 12/16/2009 & rated 88 points: (269 views)
Tasted by plasticman on 11/27/2009 & rated 89 points: (280 views)
Tasted by plasticman on 11/27/2009 & rated 89 points: (278 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 10/28/2009 & rated 85 points: nose - strawberry and celery, light toast
mouth - predominantly bitter flavors, almost like a digestif. some greenery mixed with red fruits. not feeling the love today. (527 views)
Tasted by JeremyQ on 10/24/2009 & rated 90 points: Ruby red colour - looks like a pinot. A nose of vibrant red fruits, but could detect the alcohol. We were doing a blind tasting and the alcohol content pointed to a Cali pinot. On the taste, nice fresh fruit, cherries, a bit of strawberries but also some alcohol. (494 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 10/16/2009 & rated 92 points: Beautiful ruby color with perfect clarity. Vibrant nose of bright red fruit (cherry and strawberry and maybe some cranberry) along with a bit of forest floor but mostly new world on the nose. More of the same on the palate with loads of juicy red fruits dancing on the palate with medium+ to high acid make this a great food wine. Some secondary flavors of sweet spice on the palate as well but not overly complex. Possibly a few more years will help it develop but the wine is delicious now and super silky smooth on the palate and finish. Great new world pinot. (535 views)
Tasted by z_willus_d on 10/9/2009 & rated 92 points: 1hr decant in med-base at 65F. Beautiful color. Intensity, purity, and depth of fruit all decorate the beautiful bouquet. There's a complexity of smells which marry forest-floor pine with wood-stove cooked sourdough bread crust topped-off with fresh mixed berry cocktail. An oak presence makes itself known but is well integrated. I'm fully impressed with the impression this wine leaves on my palate. There's great complexity (attacks in waves) and superb length to the flavors. Cherry, cranberry and spice all take turns. This equal to the best Anderson Valley Pinot Noir I've had. Pressing up against 93 pts. A great match to my seared duck birthday dish.

Absolutely amazing on day4 having only been re-plugged with cork in the refrigerator; the best AV Pinot I have had and 93+ pts. (596 views)
Tasted by grrrpor on 10/4/2009 & rated 92 points: love it love it love it. astonishing aroma popping and drinks well from the first pour, but about 30 minutes + and a slight bitterness blows off the taste. we LOVED how this was drinking tonight - felt like if we'd not been polite, we each would've snatched the bottle all for ourselves and consumed the whole thing.... (666 views)
 Tasted by euge.lee on 8/22/2009 & rated 90 points: (628 views)
Tasted by BigTarheel on 8/7/2009 & rated 91 points: Very well made wine. Bright and pure with classic soft ruby color and velvety texture. The wine is complex with excellent acidity and should continue to age for 5+ years. The acidity probably needs some time to come into balance but it does mellow with aeration. A very promising new Pinot that does not give into the high alcohol and over-extraction of many new "cult" Pinots. (761 views)
Tasted by Normones on 7/29/2009 flawed bottle: Bummed. this bottle was flawed. I have one more :) (882 views)
Tasted by Varus on 5/22/2009 & rated 93 points: Delicious, concentrated and pure. The fruit is so delicious and balanced - a veritable mountain of strawberries, raspberries and cranberries. The wine explodes on the palate and finishes with delicious, perfectly placed tannins. The pure fruit is balanced with just the right amount of acidity. This is simply great Pinot. (1052 views)
Tasted by grrrpor on 3/26/2009 & rated 92 points: this makes me think of how much I love Pinot. On opening, raspberry juice down my chin with a big splash of vanilla in my nose..... after a bit of air, it calms down.... now the rhubarb comes through.... it's just gorgeous Pinot, and that works for me. (1185 views)
Tasted by Traxx on 2/23/2009 & rated 91 points: (1042 views)
Tasted by grrrpor on 1/29/2009 & rated 91 points: very young and we didn't give it much time to breathe - bright young fruit -delicious nose - not heavy as other high end pinots can be - but really lovely. do the rest want time in the bottle. I'm sure they do. will they get it? well........ (1244 views)
Tasted by phlin on 1/24/2009 & rated 88 points: Falltacular 2009 (Casa Murray - San Juan Capistrano, CA): Fruity and easy to drink with cheerful notes of bright cherries, watermelon, and shadings of sous bois. Not terribly complex, but I did very much like the mouthfeel, which I found rather supple and light. 88-89 points. (1271 views)
Tasted by Traxx on 1/21/2009 & rated 92 points: Again very good. More black cherries on this bottle, some vanilla, very creamy. Very very good. (1274 views)
Tasted by DenisLee on 11/12/2008: Note to self--try decanting next time. Cellar temp is too cold, and my favorite sip was my last. I think we drank this too cold and too fast. It was just blossoming when it was finished. (1374 views)
Tasted by Traxx on 9/23/2008 & rated 92 points: A bit brighter fruit than I recalled, very very good. (1512 views)
 Tasted by shaferguy91 on 9/3/2008 & rated 90 points: Decanted 1.5 hours. (1563 views)
Tasted by rockguit on 8/29/2008 & rated 92 points: (1209 views)
Tasted by vbellore on 8/26/2008 & rated 91 points: Explosive nose of red berries as soon as I pulled the cork. Plenty of strawberry, and raspberry, with a bit of extraction. Palate echoed the nose. This wine lacked the complexity i expect this price point, in many ways it is similar to a Ken Wright wine. Maybe in a few years time this wine will reveal more, as I sensed some green notes towards the end of the bottle. A seamless wine, but perhaps a bit too simple (1663 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 8/25/2008 & rated 91 points: Family Winemakers San Francisco; 8/24/2008-8/25/2008 (Fort Mason, San Francisco): Spicy cherry nose; tasty Anderson Valley fruit, spicy cherry; medium finish (1710 views)

Black Kite Cellars is an Anderson Valley, California winery dedicated to Pinot Noir. The 40 acre site is in proximity to the Navarro River in a section of Anderson Valley know as “Deep End”. The site was purchased in 1995 by Donald and Maureen Green and three generations of the Green family are involved in winery operations. In 1999 12 acres were planted to Pinot Noir. Vineyard management is handled by Paul Ardzronni who started in 2004. Wine making is handling by Jeff Gaffner who began duties with the 2005 vintage. The vineyard is divided into three blocks of 4 acres each. Redwood’s Edge planted with 114 and 115 clones, Stoney Terrace planted with Pommard. River Turn planted with Pommard. While Black Kite released their first wine in 2003, it was the 2005 vintage when Jeff Gaffner made the wines that brought the winery notoriety. Reviews were extremely favorable with most publications scoring the three releases in the low 90's.

About red wine
Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
