  • A tough crowd out/down there 🥴. To me, this is a perfectly nice Rhone blend; the nose os a bit smokey and the finish of long a bit hot; the fruit is still there and it is tangibly dark, but overall good balance.

  • Nice. A bit old, and a touch porty. Don't hold any longer.

  • I’m still not sold on this wine. Darrell drank a bottle while I was out of town and liked it, but tonight, I fought it all along the way. Tasted terrible on opening. Scent was not terrible but tasted very smoky and either strong of Grenache or Mourvèdre…not sure which, but in a cheap local wine kind of way. After about 2 hours decanting, it has softened but that cheap wine taste continues, tho some more interesting flavors are becoming more evident. Very fruity but indistinct. The smokiness is still pronounced after two hours. It actually seemed to pair well with our fruit and cheese spread dinner. The cheese seemed to softened to strong flavors. There is a flavor in this wine that very much reminds me of cheap red wine, but I can’t tell if it’s the Grenache or Mourvèdre. Continues to taste smoky. I can’t say I would ever go out and buy this wine…I’m drinking it because we got stuck with 3 cases of it when we bought a friend’s complete cellar.

  • This is a wine we love to hate. When we purchased a colleagues cellar in November of 2020, we found we had almost 3 cases of 98 and a couple bottles of 97. A few bottles we have had has been decent, but most have been barely drinkable. Tonight we opened one bottle and after getting fairly disgusted with it, opened a second bottle to see if it was any better. The first was extremely raisiny in bouquet and taste.. almost sappy. I appreciate Mike L’s review from 2018. We had the same opinion! I love a raisiny taste in an amarone, but this was just too much. Almost thick and syrupy. This wine is becoming a running joke in the house...when my husband says “how about a Nine Popes?” I wrinkle my nose and say, “my cooking isn’t good enough for something better?”

We opened a second bottle, which wasn’t as “thick” as the first but it was only marginally better. I do believe this wine is past it’s prime and is way out of a drinkable window. But we keep trying it because we hate to pour out 2 cases of wine.
