  • Colour is darker than my expectation. Nose is slightly funky with herbs, apples, and caramel. While the acidity still resides with the wine, it is rich and ripe with an alcoholic finish. It could be a result of Lafon’s batonnage practice.

  • A 'Lost Cellar' wine.
When White Burgundy ages well its terrific and this was an aged bottle drinking beautifully from the first taste but which evolved immensely until the last taste. The colour was a correct deep green gold with a nose of yellow peaches, nectarines, lemon drops, hazelnuts, oats and honey. The palate was intense with real weight and drive. There was a gripping austerity and a finish of crushed limestone that was very distinctive. The overall package leans towards boisterous rusticity but the grip and lovely nose hold it together ! An unexpectedly pleasant surprise.

  • Vertical wine tasting of Meursault Clos de la Barre by Domaine des Comtes Lafon.

Clos de la Barre is located at the heart of the village, behind the house of the Domaine. This 2.1ha parcel is a totally enclosed 'monopoly'. Vines are 25 to 50yrs old. ½ha was replanted in 2004.

1996 vintage is a very good year. It should give elegant and racy wines with clean, well-defined flavors. Unfortunately this one is slightly oxidized. Full-bodied mature wine beyond its peak and declining.

  • Golden yellow. Ineffable nose of pears, hazelnuts, and honey, secondary notes of musk, toast. Honey and figs on the palate, round mellow mouth feel, blooming at the back with a crisp bitter lift and a long acidic finish. 50 + 17 + 16 + 9.
