Community Tasting Notes (3)

  • After recently tasting the 1990 and 1985 Chave Hermitage, and using them as comparisons, I am still very satisfied with the individuality and personality shown in this wine.

  • Same impressions as below. Surprised how well the wine went with the side dish of mashed potatoes and epoisses; the "funkiness" of both the wine and the cheese were quite complementary. In addition, there was "clean fruit" on the palate.

Surprisingly this wine still had a dark ruby colour with the thinnest orange rim. There was a distinct note of musk on the nose with underlying notes of violets and toast. Full of fruit (of cough syrup intensity) and oak on the palate and finish. Later I got truffles, licorice, and coffee on the palate as well as "garrigue". The wine consumed with home-made hamburgers and fries showed a ripe and concentrated fruit core; after coffee and some Bendrick's dark chocolate mints, the wine still held its personality. From what I read about the "traditional" Cornas, I believe that I have experienced an example of this dying breed (full of animal smells and needing time in the bottle to be "tamed" and also showing "gout de terroir"). I thoroughly enjoyed it, but this wine is "brutish" and may be off-putting to the "unexpecting".
