  • We popped 21 bottles of Cru Barolo - 2004 tonight, in order to really dig into the real details of the communes, with this horizontal tasting.
This is another fine bottle of Barolos equivalent to Chambolle – Musigny.
A lovely feminine transparent wine, on the light side of Barolo.
Nose shows violets, wild strawberries, ripe strawberries and elegant perfume with minerals.
Palate shows strawberries, elegant, airy, feminine and transparent with fat chalk and minerals on the silky, complex and long finish.
I adore this wine! (A word of warning: some bottle variation has shown in previous bottles, with quite a few corked examples, so pray when you open! Such a shame)
However, this bottle was healthy, the wine kept evolving in the glass all evening, and ended up on my top four list for wine of the night.
This is most likely the finest wine made in the commune of Castiglione (not counting the Cà d’Morrissio, the riserva version of the same wine from the same vineyard and producer), and one of Langhe’s absolutely finest!

  • 2 hour slo-o prior to bringing to the restaurant, where they decanted it. My first taste upon opening was a rather harsh, grassy palate. An hour later, no change. First sip at restaurant was much better. 5 minutes later the wine waffled back to the harsh grassy palate which now extended to the finish. While the wine was drinkable, it really was not very good. Off bottle? I hope so.

Second bottle the next day, 2 hour slo-o. Better than first bottle. Harsh, grassy palate was gone replaced by a softer, medium to light-bodied palate. Finish was rather short as was the bouquet. While this drank better than previous bottle, it was much less exciting than other Barolo I have had from this vintage, at least at the moment.

Herregud vilket bra vin!
I smaken samma solmogna bär, underbar tydlig syra, påtagliga men silkiga tanniner. Fantastisk balans, komplexitet och nästan transparant struktur.
