Community Tasting Notes (average 87.4 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 77 notes)

Tasted by MurphyCellar on 11/26/2009 & rated 90 points: Wonderful fruit and spice with a silky finish. (337 views)
Tasted by larrycoakley on 10/2/2009 & rated 88 points: (454 views)
Tasted by kenthargis on 7/21/2009 & rated 89 points: Great price to value ratio. The age certain helped mellow the petit sirah. Quite enjoyable. Rustic, but not in a bad way. Would recommend. Good blend. (883 views)
Tasted by DrT999 on 5/26/2009 & rated 89 points: On opening: black raspberry and a hint of cherry on the nose; black raspberry, black current, and a touch of cherry upfront, with some plum coming through on the moderate finish. Modest sweet tannins. A little jammy, and a little heat.

+ 90 minutes the heat and tannins are gone and the flavors have deepened and darkened (although the length is about the same). Very nice (1170 views)
Tasted by mactheripper on 5/17/2009 & rated 87 points: Opened up considerably with decanting for 2-3 hrs. Some heat that increased with time. Dark fruit and faint chocolate flavors. I'd like to try again with different food. (1221 views)
Tasted by WineKnurd on 4/30/2009 & rated 88 points: Big, dark, brooding, and evil. Lots of dark berries and black fruit. I love it. Style & Quality: B+ (new world style). Value: B at $18. Overall: B+. (1282 views)

Tasted by maxmanx on 3/26/2009 & rated 87 points: Probably a little old at this point. I remember it being better when I first tried it. (1495 views)
Tasted by brlandry on 2/3/2009 & rated 84 points: Enjoyable with blackberry, currant, and molasses tastes. A bit tight at first; I would recommend decanting. (1523 views)
Tasted by sumshark on 1/31/2009 & rated 88 points: (1238 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 1/29/2009 & rated 89 points: Notes of blackberry, currant, a bit of coffee and subtle oak. I think cellar time has helped this become more than just a big wine, but rounded, complex and a nice value. (1536 views)
Tasted by dharlow on 1/19/2009 & rated 90 points: (1272 views)
Tasted by bobfrank on 12/23/2008 & rated 90 points: BBQ chicken. Another good fit. (1646 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 10/27/2008 & rated 90 points: (1349 views)
Tasted by PolarBear22 on 10/25/2008 & rated 89 points: Drank well. The PS comes through with moderate tannins. The tannins are brought down by the zin. Good blend. (1688 views)
Tasted by dharlow on 9/27/2008 & rated 90 points: (1330 views)
Tasted by robnmo on 9/6/2008 & rated 87 points: decanted for little over an hour. very dark in the glass. had trouble getting too much out of the nose at first. A bit of heat showed through, and some candied plums. On the palate the wine is sweeter than I thought it would be. Nice waves of chocolate, and dark fruit on the palate. (1959 views)
Tasted by BigNightOut on 8/9/2008 & rated 85 points: The real Phantom at first was the nose. It was almost imperceptible until a dose of aeration revealed blackberry/strawberry liquer and the tiniest hint of sage. More new world and very familiar in many ways. Improved considerably with time. Midweight tannins, this reminded me most of a classy Aussie Shiraz. (1987 views)

Tasted by Bob & Sue Atlanta on 6/1/2008 & rated 91 points: (2047 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 5/27/2008: dark purple color in the glass. nose isn't very expressive at cellar temperature. opened up a bit to show dark plum and chocolate. the attack is nice, and the wine has solid tannic strucutre, which impressed me. there are nice blueberry jam, red licorice, black rasberry, toast and chocolate flavors. the heat isn't bad. leans more toward a zinfandel profile, but it does show those great dark fruit flavors you associate with petite sirah. (this was a controversial wine, however. i liked it, as did another in the group. two hated it and my wife said it tasted like green pepper juice and hi-c spiked with alcohol, fyi) 54% petite sirah. 43% zinfandel and 3% mourvedre. 15% alcohol. grapes sourced from clarksburg, amador, lodi and oakley. The black magic is back…Phantom. Three unique varietals combine lush berry and fierce spice into a full-bodied wine. Intensely fruit forward on the entry, this deep ruby apparition begins with aromas of blueberries, violets and chocolate-covered cherries, dusted with touches of black pepper. From the deep dark depths, subtle notes of spice, clove and mocha emerge and compliment the concentrated fruit characters of this wine. Aging for two years in 1, 2 and 3 year-old American oak barrels has yielded a vexing array of toasty oak aromas to Phantom. Though this wine is remarkable now, age in the bottle will only integrate the three distinct varietals more. Welcome the winery ghost into your home again with this latest vintage, and enjoy with full-flavored and hearty meals…before it vanishes again.
