  • This wine may not have all the complexities of its youth, but at 20 years it still maintains some grip and structure.
Aromas and flavors of old leather were predominant.
Surprisingly quite pleasant though past it’s prime

  • Had 2 bottles of varying quality - certainly not in its prime, but still enjoyable nonetheless!

  • My 3rd note on this wine in 6 years.
    2 hour decant.
Light bricking on the rim, Opaque dark red through the core with a touch haziness. Aromas are moderate+ in intensity, beautifully complex letting aromas of old leather, old wood, tobacco, dried cherries, dried porcini mushrooms, herbs (particularly rosemary, sage and thyme), currants, dust, mineral, pencil shavings and a definitive forest floor note.
The palate shows this wine is still drinking well to say the least. Acidity is medium-plus and keeps this wine bright and lifted while the tannins are grippy and dusty at a moderate/moderate-plus level. Flavors upfront hold tobacco, old leather, dried herbs, dry aged red meats, dried cherries and currants, and balsamic nuances. Complex and long on the finish. Remarkable what this can do when cellared properly.
A standout for a less than good vintage.

  • The 2002 Marques de Riscal Reserva is still enjoyable but at the end of its prime. It has a deep garnet colour and fairly fragrant aromas of lead pencil, damp earth and some mild notes of fig and prune. It is medium bodied with a soft texture and has developed some interesting secondary flavours of old leather chair and - somewhat excessive - vegetal notes. The finish is medium and the fruit starting to fade as this tannic, now angular wine enters its declining phase. Still a good value but it requires immediate drinking.

  • Showing signs of being a little too old. SLight oxidative notes. STill plenty of fruit though and overall a pleasant tempranillo.
