Just limited notes. Beautiful bouquet with chocolate, coffee and ripe black berries. Same on the palate. Beautiful acidity, well integrated oak and soft tannin with still a good bite. Beautiful wine with plenty of future.
Andrew's and Howard's birthday dinner (Hippopotamus Restaurant, Wellington): Deep purple colour, the wine looked very young. An attractive, modern bouquet of spicy plums, blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate, with some toasty oak aromas present. On palate, clearly a deep, powerful, large scaled wine in the international style. Fully ripe. The oak carried onto the palate with flavours of vanilla, cassis, espresso and herbs. For a 10 year old wine, this is also quite primary and an excellent wine if you like this style.
Pre-release tasting of Catena Zapata with Ernesto Bajda: Tannic, still primary, beef blood and salty smoke. Very typical Cab, beef stock, cold cuts. Tremendous depth on the palate, meaty, sandalwood, Claret flavours. High acidity, still tannic. Just a tad heavy, just slightly overpowering. Difficult to score--- I'm going for a conservative 93.
Summer cabin weekend; 8/8/2014-8/9/2014 (Cleveland, GA): Decanted 2.5 hours and followed over the next two hours. Dark, opaque purple color. Nose of blackberry juice and creamy, sweet milk chocolate. There is subtle, distant graphite mineral and earthy loam, but the overwhelming notions are full-bodied, rich, ripe blackberry juice and extract. Compared to the bottle in 2010, this does not have the same degree of secondary complexity. It's a very tasty, fruity Cab-Malbec blend now, but it should benefit from a few more years to allow the massive fruit to tone down in favor of the secondary characteristics. Drink 2017-2026.
