  • Upfront disclosure: this is the first Port that I had ever drunk. Since tasting this Port for the first time a few years ago, I've tried several others (true Ports from Portugal, as well as various others), but none have come close to being as good as this Port from Paso Robles. My dad gave me this bottle recently since he doesn't drink roses or dessert wines. This Port consists of four different Portugese varietals that I've never heard of (36% Touriga, 30% Alvarelhao, 20% Souzao, and 14% Tinta Cao). The color is a deep, dark garnet, the nose is oaky, fruity, and spicy, and the Port is fantastically deep, rich, and delicious. On the palate, there are deep, dark, red fruits (prunes and blackberries), a perfect amount of oak (barrel aged for 24 months), a hint of spice and earth, with a long, smooth, lingering finish. During the winter months, this is our favorite after-dinner drink (the 20.5% alcohol level compensates for those long, cold winter nights). As far as the 90 point rating, our inexperience/ignorance with dessert wines (especially Ports) precludes us from truly and accurately juding this Port (though we've tried several others). Honestly, we'd love to give this wine a 95. Either way, it's rich, creamy, and beyond delicious. Can't wait to go back to Paso to buy a couple more bottles for next winter.

  • This went well with Rocky Road ice cream. Everyone really enjoyed this port. It is not too sweet and not too overpowering, but very pleasant and a nice end to the evening.
