Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 19 notes)

Tasted by wineglas on 2/15/2010 & rated 91 points: Medium red and a little bricking. Leather, violets, wood, and On the palate the wine shows intense spices, cherry, wood, vanilla, and violets. Soft tannins and balanced. This is drinking well right now and I don't see a reason to age too much longer. (313 views)

Tasted by Anonymous on 1/3/2009 & rated 89 points: Very enjoyable... inky dark, peppery black fruits, spicy finish. (586 views)
Tasted by Icarus on 7/11/2008: No notes taken. Consistent with previous notes. Excellent wine for <$30. (648 views)

Tasted by Icarus on 1/23/2008 & rated 91 points: No notes taken. Popped and poured. The nose gives a straightforward blend of dark fruit, smoke, earth, and oak. The taste is dominated by dark fruit with just enough earthiness to keep things interesting. Good presence on the palate. Medium weight. Well structured. Decent finish. (993 views)
Tasted by Icarus on 10/25/2007: No notes taken, but this bottle was consistent with previous bottles consumed. (1126 views)
Tasted by Icarus on 5/28/2007 & rated 90 points: Similar to previous bottles. The nose gives a fairly simple blend of dark fruit, smoke, earth, and oak. The taste is dominated by dark fruit with just enough earthiness to keep things interesting and good presence on the palate. Medium weight. Well structured. Decent finish. If anything, maybe a bit more simple than I was expecting. (1285 views)
Tasted by Icarus on 3/3/2007 & rated 92 points: Anniversary Dinner with Friends: Dark red color. The nose gives an interesting blend of dark fruit, smoke, earth, and oak. On the palate this is dominated by the dark fruit and is understated but very good. There is plenty of structure, and the finish is tannic and long. This is a great wine that should age well for five to ten years. (1326 views)
Tasted by Icarus on 11/11/2006: I have had this wine 5 or more times now, and this bottle showed differently than all of the others. Served between two 1999 California Cabs which could have had an influence. The nose showed much more funky than past bottles -- fungal bordering on barnyard. The palate gave austere fruit with a definite weakness on the mid-palate -- almost green. Didn't smell or taste corked. It could have had a slight brett influence. Still a nice enough wine, but I hope the remaining bottles return to the earlier form. (1406 views)
Tasted by Icarus on 9/6/2006: No notes taken. This was very good once again. Consistent with previous bottles. (1546 views)
Tasted by Icarus on 8/10/2006: Another great bottle consistent with previous notes. (1535 views)
Tasted by Icarus on 8/10/2006 flawed bottle: Corked. (1552 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 8/1/2006 & rated 90 points: On the nose, lots of blackberries, some raspberry and tobacco. On the palate, medium bodied, with blackberries, cherries and a hint of raspberry and earth, with a medium-length, somewhat tannic finish. This is still a bit backward, and could use another year or two to come into proper balance. (1409 views)
Tasted by Icarus on 7/15/2006: This is the third bottle that I have had recently. Not a problem, though, as I purchased three cases -- $27.50 for a wine of this quality is too good to pass up. Dark fruit, oak, and strong earthy elements on the nose. On the palate, this is a very stern wine. Not quite as structured as, say, a young Leoville Las Cases, but structured. Some opulent dark fruit keeps this pleasant, and the finish is long. I am thankful that I will be able to experience this wine fairly often over the next 10 or so years to see how it develops.  Tasted by Icarus on 6/10/2006 & rated 92 points: Dark red color. The nose shows dark fruit, earthy flavors and oak. This is a big, nicely structured wine in the mouth, but with plenty of fruit. The finish is tannic and long. A very nice wine that should drink well for at least another five years. (1761 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 4/23/2006 & rated 90 points: Central Texas Offline in Austin, TX (Winetex's Home in Austin, TX): WIML90,WA88,WS90

Tasted April 23, 2006 at Winetexs’ home in Austin, TX. Opened and decanted then double decanted back into the bottle for serving about 30 minutes before serving in a Riedel (I believe) Cabernet glass provided by Winetex. Ruby color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of tobacco, smoke and anise. Flavors of pepper, bitters and Bing cherries. Drink over the next 3-4 years. If you can get a good price of around $40.00 a bottle on this wine then I’d say the value is agreeable. Much more than that I’d be cautious. (2106 views)
Tasted by Spencer on 11/30/2004 & rated 93 points: Farmington Wine Class - Spanish Tasting. Inky black color. Beautiful, complex nose full of blueberry syrup, espresso, and soy. High acid and tannins, but balanced and complex with loads of black fruit. Long, expansive finish. Although terrific now, this wine has tons of strucuture, and should be even better in a couple years. (2058 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 5/12/2004 & rated 91 points: An outstanding wine but not as good as the 1999 poured last year (but then I would expect that since 1999 was a superior vintage in RdD). A round wine with rather integrated tannins. Smooth fruit notes including blackberry and raspberry. 91 points. (1859 views)

About Red Wines

Varietal character (Appellation America) | TAPAS: Tempranillo Advocates, Producers and Amigos Society

Tempranillo is the premium red wine grape variety from the Rioja and Ribera del Duero region in Spain. Tempranillo's aromas and flavors often combine elements of berryish fruit, herbaceousness, and an earthy-leathery minerality. Being low in acidity and sugar content, it is commonly blended with Carignan (Mazuela), Grenache (Garnacha), Graciano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos and Amontillados. But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
