Slight bottle stink which blew off quickly. Cork crusty with fine crystals (tartrate, I assume but never seen them on the top of the cork).
Well balanced, faint fruit, still has good tannic structure. A little musky tertiary development but still solidly secondary. I understand this vintage was noted for being lighter as a result of replanting due to previous frosts (thanks @Snizzy).
Enjoyable for sure, but I guess when you drink a first growth of that age you have all kinds of expectations.

Dark rubis with a slightly ambered rim. The nose is very attractive with notes of tropical forest, fraises des bois and truffles. The palate is even more complex with mashed tobacco leave, tar, cigar box, black forest cake, game, leather, spice and chocolate. The finish is at least 20 seconds long with perfect silky tannins.
From 750ml. Decanted and served an hour later. Cork was remarkable, fully intact and only soaked for 1 or 2mm. Clearly very well stored. Colour was brick red with hardly any brown edges. Nose was superb. Not much fruit but classic, aged Latour nose with plenty of cedar and wood. On the palate the fruit was faded but this was still a good balance of acidity and tannin, and a long classic aged Latour finish. Prett remarkable for an average vintage of this age. It shows that Latour was (and still probably is) the king of the commune for making age worthy wine in ok vintages. Needs to be drunk now though as is nearing the end of a long, gentle decline in fruit.

Magnums for Dave (Jean-Georges - New York, NY): From magnum. Good nose of secondary character with cedar and tobacco. Fruit mostly gone at first on the palate, giving it a slightly harsh start. Some power and balance emerged in the middle and finish.

Quite a dark Latour with some remaining tannin. Abundant earth tones. Better than expected.
