This magnum of the 1959 Pichon Lalande was singing, and much better than I remember previous encounters with this wine. A beautiful and expressive bouquet burst from the glass with a melange of creamy raspberry, cherry, fresh tobacco leaf and cedar. On the palate, this wine displays a beautiful balance and quite fresh acids for a '59, with an extremely seductive, layered texture and lovely melted tannins. Gaining in volume with time in the glass and decanter, this particular magnum was at its absolute peak.
Typhoon Squad at the Wine Vault: Nothing better than kicking it off with some mellow old claret. Fill was about mid-high shoulder and the bottle was in decent condition. Nice bronze color and the nose was quite pleasing but the palate lacked the vigor of the nose. Everything the way it should be for a 50+ year old Pauillac. An elegant old lady but didn't really excite me tonight. First time with this wine for me so lacked other reference points
