(Gouges Henri Nuits St.Georges Clos des Porrets St.Georges) Medium-plus colour. The nose has width despite a tight but silky impression - slowly opens up to show darker notes and a hint of spice. Mouth-filling, again with a little spicy impression. Plenty of tannin and very good acidity. A little more licorice flavour. This clearly needs plenty of time, but it's very nice!

Absolutely beautiful, dense but bright full ruby. Glorious. On first taste, this ticks all the Gouges boxes — dense, tannic, steak wine. Just as well it’s accompanying steak. After a couple of hours though the medium to fine tannins seem to melt away to a dense silky plushness, and the mid to dark red fruit comes to the fore. Supple, dense, almost lush. If served blind I was told it was a 19 drinking on its fruit I’d believe it. Ready to go in its primary phase, but it’s a long way from showing any meaty Nuits development. Oh so drinkable though. ***(*)

This 2006 is now very underwhelming, while 2004 (yep...) and 2010 are great. Rough structure and not the finesse / aromas you expect to enjoy in a 15 year old NSG.

Never really opened up. Light oxidative notes, but above all, the tannic structure is the issue. If i wanted tannins, i’ll go for barolo, not NSG! Not the first time i am disappointed by this producer so i guess i’ll just give it a pass from now on…

Brief notes from memory. Quite intense, earthy, feral and with unresolved tannins. This felt somewhat old school actually, brooding and, to my surprise, more approachable than the 2002 I opened that same evening. Rugged yet dignified, like countryside aristocracy, this a very good wine, and perhaps still too young?
