An evening with wine geeks: From Magnum, tasted blind. Hard to identify as Ygay and has very little in common with the great GRE’s I had before. Maybe a not so optimal bottle? This wine was clearly past its prime. Drink up. 87-88

The '91 Ygay Grand Riserve is showing beautifully tonight. Here I found balsamic infused dried cherry, tobacco, savory herbs, cocoa, and exotic spice. It displayed soft textures offset by dried citrus and vibrant acidity, giving way to tart cherry and inner floral tones. The finish went on and on with a twang of tart citrus and young red fruit. So enjoyable tonight that it's hard to imagine it getting better--but we all know it will.

A blend of Tempranillo (75%), Mazuelo (13%), Garnacha (10%) and Graciano (2%).
Dark, almost fully opaque cherry red color that turns somewhat developed maroon towards the rim. Quite dark-toned and somewhat developed nose with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, some plum compote, a little bit of savory wood, light herbal hints of lavender and a touch of vanilla with a hint of bottle stink that slowly dissipates with air. The wine is rich, moderately full-bodied and somewhat developed with quite brooding flavors of sweet black cherries, some earthy spices and dried herbs like lavender, cloves and rosemary, light leathery tones, a little bit of animal funk, dried-fruit hints of raisins and a touch of fresh red plums. The wine shows balanced and quite smooth structure with its moderately high acidity and ripe medium tannins. The finish is long, lively and complex with flavors of tangy sour cherries, dark-toned flavors of plums and blackcurrants, some crunchy red fruits, a little bit of leathery funk and a touch of savory wood.
A very harmonious, fine-tuned and thoroughly classic Rioja Gran Reserva that isn't about power or concentration, but instead depth, poise and balance. Starting to show some signs of age, the wine is still yet to reach its apogee and most likely the wine will continue to develop for a decade or even several. Not the most spectacular Ygay Gran Reserva Especial or Rioja Gran Reserva for that matter, but a very attractive effort all the same.
