A gift that our friend Matt shared with us as he prepared to move out of state. This bottle was a treasure he was rewarded with after a charity event he worked at a wine patron's estate. I can't do the wine justice in words but it was delightful in its structure, complexity and balanced maturity- a great wine shared by a good friend on a somewhat sad occasion.
CellarTracker Texas Offline; 5/21/2010-5/22/2010 (San Antonio): A look back into the past of what this winery was trying to be at the beginning. I would be hard pressed to pick this out in a Bordeaux lineup in a double blind challenge. Beautiful color with a hint of bricking. On the nose tobacco, red currant, sour cherry, mint, mushroom, black tea, cinnamon, blackberry. On the plate, red currant, cherry, blackberry, mint, mushroom. Finishes with a very nice acidic backbone. Layers and layers of flavor. What a treat. Outstanding
13.4% alcohol. Cabernet Sauvignon 50%, Cabernet Franc 30%, Merlot 20%. Opened and served immediately. Garnet color in the glass, fairly clear hue. Nose of ash, tobacco, berries, florals and a base of wet stones. Flavors of berries and cherries framed over a base of minerals. Medium to bright acidity, medium tannins, medium body. Lovely wine. I'd put this into an 82 Bordeaux blind tasting and defy you to pick it out.
CT Texas Offline; 5/21/2010-5/23/2010 (San Antonio): This could have passed for a fine old classified Bordeaux. Beautifully clear and regal to look at. Very secondary, almost tertiary in its nuances, showing leather, green tobacco, earth and truffle, with just a touch of fruit. This was very appealing and a rare pleasure.
Thirty Years of Phelps Insignia (1974 through 2004): Slight VA on the nose mixed with dark fruit and mushroom. This is awesome on the palate -- featuring fresh red fruit and some earthiness. Lively on the palate and great length. An amazing showing for a 25 year old Napa blend. My WOTF.
