Had 2 bottles on the night, decanted for 30 minutes and very similar. Brittle corks in both cases. The wine is definitely alive and although well aged by now still has quite a bit of fruit however it lacks vitality. It is as if it is in a plateau. Light on the body. Vega is Vega and although this is good it is not magical. 92 drink now.
Opened for lunch and briefly decanted, this wine was attractive in the glass, garnet colored with slight lightening around the edges. The nose was fairly complex, starting with sweet strawberries and a touch of cedar and developing some richer, cherry aromas and those of loamy soil, roses and black licorice. In the mouth it was light with a nice acid lift and fruit like strawberry-rhubarb, all in much like a mature Burgundy. The finish was on the short side but with no objectionable components. Not a vintage I would chose every day (and one often forgotten, hidden as it is between the amazing ’68 and ’70 Unico wines), it was a nice representative of my birth year and proved a very pleasant accompaniment to a plate of sandwiches picked up at Bay Cities Deli.
