This really surprised to the upside. I've always found this bottling a little tough and unfriendly, and on top of that it's an '88, but the texture here was totally smooth and open-knit - refined, even.
SAG (Blind) Tasting (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Tasted blind. Big dense and tannic. Didn't show particularly "Volnay" to me, not showing really interesting spice. I'm not sure the vintage was generally as successful in Volnay vs. Cote de Nuits based on my limited experience with 1988 Volnay in the past few years.
Medium garnet ruby. Broad paler rim showing quite some development. On first opening rather farmyardy, but this soon recedes to show deep plum and redcurrant fruit. Still, very mature on the nose - with touches of gamey meat. Mouth entry is crisp, with fresh acidic red fruit and real earthiness as well as a touch of game. Full and earthy on the mid-palate with a long, floral touched, spicy redcurrant finish. Firm tannic structure showing on the finish, but not prominent. ***
Floral and femimine start shows good Volnay character. Palate was less forthcoming with good red fruit behind lots of acidity and tannins. Still fresh enough that I'd expect this to evolve nicely and improve over the next 5-10 years.
