Tart, sour cherry, clean red fruit, good acid balance with solid fruit. Very good. (203 views) | | | Tasted by Mrbuzz on 7/27/2010 & rated 89 points: Needs air....very tight, tart, angular, not a good drink day 1. Day 2 however.....the sharp edges have mellowed, but still pretty high in pomegranate/cranberry acidity, which is more integrated with the sweet wild berry fruit. Nice array of floral candied spices, cola, smoked earth dust, pine sap, dried orange/cranberry tea leaves. Tasty and high toned, but not my fav. from RM. Needs better balance.....hold for further development. (280 views) | | | Tasted by WetRock on 7/12/2010: Lots of dark fruits showing here with Bing cherry and blackberry being prominent with a touch of SC pine aroma. Big fruit in front that is in no way heavy with a good dose of acidity to balance it. A great effort for a appellation bottling. This has a ways to go though I think it will always be best younger for its freshness. RM nailed the 06's better than most makers in CA. Very good. (383 views) | | | Tasted by RussW on 6/2/2010 & rated 90 points: Very disjointed on day 1 with lots of acidity and subdued tart fruit. On day 2 the wine is in much better balance with the acidity playing much more of supporting role. The fruit has firmed up and become a bit richer with nice cherry/strawberry/cranberry flavors. Give this another year to flesh out. (476 views) | | | Tasted by RussW on 6/2/2010 & rated 90 points: Very disjointed on day 1 with lots of acidity and subdued tart fruit. (856 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 1/21/2010 & rated 92 points: Great crisp, clean wine with a strawberry, cherry and rasberry focus and a hiint of baking spice and cinnamon. Great QPR (950 views) | | | Tasted by S. Lorin on 1/20/2010 & rated 91 points: the red fruit here is so wonderfully vivid and refreshing with bright acidity - sweet cherries, strawberries, rhubarb but added dimension of pinewood, evergreen, and mint smooth, restrained, and delicious and on the level of a burgundy village. how does TRB consistently do it??? (906 views) | | | Tasted by Todd French on 1/18/2010 & rated 91 points: Very intriguing nose - sweet cherry, pine, baking spices, and a hint of greenness, like stem inclusion. Very silky mouthfeel, a blast of sweet cherry which is a bit off-putting to me, as it is remarkably sweet (for my taste in Pinot), but the structure and flavor profiles are quite well balanced. Most impressive about this wine is the finish, which belies the price tag a bit, and goes on for a long time, with a very pleasant combination of red fruits and some floral and terroir components. (1024 views) | | | Tasted by dannyk8232 on 12/18/2009 & rated 91 points: One hour decant.
Subtle yet refined aromas of cherry and earth. Not overwhelmingly fruity or earthy on the palate, which makes for an extremely nice, friendly pinot. A good balance of berries, acidity and even some chocolate. Very fine tannins on the finish, with much less heat than I am used to from CA pinots. A refined wine, yet a bit complex. Excellent.

On the palate a more abrupt ascent of moderate acidity into a very plush midpalate, smooth transition into a moderately tannic, very ripe and round finish, moderate alcohol. Good balance and intensity, average length and complexity. Has ok finesse, a fullish, plush texture, and expresses its New worldness well. A somewhat monolithic, lush, but well made wine that I would drink now or hold 1-2 years. (1187 views) | | | Tasted by gutt22 on 11/13/2009: 14.2% alcohol. Opened for two hours before serving but not decanted. After pouring into the glass, it needed another 30 minutes and some good swirling to come around, but when it did, the wine was gorgeous. Red cherry color. Lovely nose of red and black cherry, baking spice, flowers, and a hint of minerals. In the mouth, fantastic purity with a distinct red streak to the cherry fruit. Bright acidity. Long finish that shows the slightest hint of vanilla. This is elegant, balanced, and beautiful. Still another year or to two away from its peak, but this producer is doing excellent things with Pinot. (1268 views) | | | Tasted by JOJ on 9/20/2009 & rated 93 points: Another great bottle. Even from crappy hotel room glasses, the purity of bouquet and flavor shone through. Nose of dusty cherry and raspberry, with strong cola and clove aspects. Caresses the palate with notes of cherry and raspberry, with pleasing notes of sweet oak and tannin. Good stuff. (1526 views) | | | Tasted by bon vivant on 9/15/2009: Citrus peel, x-mass cake spices on a nice frame, very good balance overall and showing lots of promise. Nice wine. (note -not sure but this could have been the Summa ) (1550 views) | | | Tasted by budman on 9/10/2009 & rated 90 points: Complex rhubarb and strawberry. Nice job! (1532 views) | | | Tasted by Vinomarcus on 8/26/2009 & rated 91 points: Gorgeous nose of rhubarb pie, strawberry jam and coriander. Well built and very well balanced. This is a fantastic Pinot that was loved by all in attendance. (1661 views) | | | Tasted by tyvoodoo on 6/7/2009 & rated 93 points: Wow, this wine had so much finesse. Nose possessed tons of fresh herbs, spice, black cherries, white pepper and toasty oak. The palate was lacking depth at first but gained weight and complexity with air time. Medium bodied wine with so much fruit and depth. Great silky light on its feet mouth feel, hints of oak, baking spice, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. Nothing out of place with this wine, a complete round nose and palate to match. This is really something else, not overblown but pure finesse the whole way through, tremendous effort! (1653 views) | | | Tasted by Screameagle on 6/3/2009 & rated 92 points: Just a beautiful pinot that's drinking quite well in it's youth. The balance of this wine is beautiful. Not overripe as many Cali pinots tend to be. More pinots should be like this wine. Sadly I have just one bottle left. (1835 views) | | | Tasted by Sedation (yellowgas) on 5/3/2009 & rated 91 points: beautiful pinot and an amazing value. nose of strawberry and cardamum. palate is smooth and effortless with clean acidity and strawberry, orange and earthy notes, just not as much depth as i would have liked. (1851 views) | | | Tasted by tonyvelebil on 4/23/2009 & rated 91 points: Accompanied a panko and parmesan crusted chicken breast with sauteed mushrooms and spinach. Out of the gate this was ready to go. Nice nose of earth, mushrooms, orange and a little hint of chocolate. On the palate it is silky smooth, with ripe cranberries, orange blossom, mushroom and little herbal quality on the finish and showed a little wet rock character. Finish thinned out just a bit on the back end but still a terrific bargain in the world of CA Pinot Noir and a terrific wine! Newsletter notes: 2006 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - 188 cases, 14.1% alcohol, 33% new French oak
This actually showed the best at bottling. In 2006, we racked and returned each barrel individually so we could evaluate the oak program and how each vineyard responded to different coopers. It also allowed us to declassify anything that we felt didn’t work for each vineyard. Though the individual parts were what didn't make the vineyard cut, the sum of these parts actually makes for quite a good wine. The blend is roughly 3 barrels Occidental Ridge, 2 barrels Summa and 3 barrels Willow Creek. The wine is an interesting mix of both red and black fruits, rhubarb and sassafras. The acidity is naturally high providing nice length to the finish. The wine, like all the other bottlings, is firm on the finish and will require a bit of patience before all the acid integrates.
About Red Wines
Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.
