  • Haven't had too many Arlauds, but certainly liked the younger vintages that I've tried. This started off with very pronounced coffee notes & smoke on the nose but soon morphed into something alot older - Chinese medicinal notes of danggui (angelica roots) & some earthly tones. Black-fruited, with decent weight. Not sure how this will keep though, with the rather quick transformation of the nose...

  • 13.5% alcohol. Very long cork, imbibed 4/5 of the way. The colour is light but not translucent due to substantial turbidity; significant thinning at the rim.
The nose is mature with tertiary notes of forrest floor and just a remnant of red wild berries. Similarly balanced in the mouth with substantial acidity in the finish; there is clear oak influence, but its direct effects are digested at this stage. Very smooth and with a commendable length.
A vg mature pinot from Burgundy, but not the ecstatic experience that you might expect from a Grand Cru. Barely acceptable value for money when I bought it en primeur, laughably overpriced nowadays.

  • Last of 6, opened 80 minutes, perfect level, cork third travelled, better showing, less jammy, fresh and pure, with v attractive mineral edge true to terroir. no rush. F+ (18).

  • 5th of 6, pnp, perfect cork and level, browner, VA much diminished, slightly jammy strawberry dosed in cola and balsamic, decent heft and complexity, aging rapidly. F (17.5).

  • 4th of 6, opened an hour, perfect level, half travelled cork, edgier, more cola and balsamic, pushing VA a bit, attractive now but not enough stuffing I suspect for long haul. F (17.5)…..recent 02 more complete.
