A classic old style Napa Cab. Mature ruby color. Intense nose of red fruit (plum) and lots of secondary aromas: tea, mint, rosemary, bell pepper. Medium to full bodied, definitely elegant and well balanced. Delicious and graceful at age 28. Here's the sad part: The price tag on the back says $ 23.99 - purchased in 1990 at a NYC wine store. The "Backus" 2010 at the some store is $ 189.99 today. Hhhhhhhm....
Medium dark red-brown. Quiet nose, with subtle cocoa power, rosemary bush, blackberries. Medium tannin, low acid. On entry unyielding (tight or tired ?); moderate amount of berry fruit and much more oak. Chocolate and coffee flavors come forward with much coaxing. After three hours, still shy or lacking expected force. Elegant I guess; tasted blind I guessed this a warm year ('90) Clos du Val SLD release. Bottle #2 of two.
nice bottle but not as good as the price bottles i've had, opened up and was a bit tight / astringent / smokey... the 1985 we had alongside was similar, this one opened up nicely after an hour or so and some fruit came forward, still didn't hit the stride i've seen from this wine before
another great showing for this wine, hard to judge nose as we were outside and breeze blowing, beautiful mouthfeel - rich without any oak influence, tannins receded completely with just a hint of dusty texture, you could taste the fruit but it was wrapped in a swirl of secondary flavors, almost had a savory side to it -- tomato?, but it was soooo good... love this wine and this vintage of this wine
