  • Ian's Birthday Piedmont Extravaganza: Well this was a treat.
I get the impression we often hold "old wines" in reverence for simply being old and I have to admit that on seeing this on the line up I tried to recall from GCSE history what events were occurring in 1967 but this performed way beyond just being a survivor of the "Summer of Love".

Laser focused red fruit - it feels like a virtuoso sax solo while the rest of the jazz band pauses. Flavour-wise there is really clear red plum with a some umeshu, it’s crystal clear and so well delineated. The finish lasts an age. This is benchmark setting for me - thank you Ian!

  • Ian's Piedmont Extravaganza (Noize): A beautiful colour, star-bright pale orange-brown, like Amontillado sherry... but surely it had to be tired, even dead, if it looked like that? Well, no - our first sniffs and sips revealed a wine that was certainly alive, and with a little more air it started to sing. Sleek, piquant and delineated, but ultimately ineffable, we all fell hard for this wine's ashy, savoury cocktail, and delighted in its long finish. An exquisite surprise, and my and the group's WOTN.

  • Ian's Piemonte Celebration Dinner: Colour looked correct, and nose showed old books, leather, flowers and tertiary red fruits. Medium bodied in profile and supremely silky showing exquisite balance, refinement and poise that was breath-taking. Despite approaching its 60th birthday (although a few years behind our host), it was by no means over the hill, or even approaching over the hill. Even revisiting the wine at the end of the evening it was still holding up well and I found the concentration and length remarkable. Hard to put into words. My WOTN.

  • La Festa del Barolo: Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): Another favorite that I almost forgot about. This is just amazing. Really fresh and bright and classic. Darker fruits and for sure more of the floral and maybe a bit more secondary but it is in just a wonderful spot. Really great wine.

  • Some Barolo Stars: This wine is very much alive and kicking but couldn’t shine this evening as we had 5 other Barolos with much more potential in the lineup. While the structure is still impeccable, the wine doesn’t have the depth to be in the 95 pts spectrum. Solo, following the wine over several hours might have revealed more nuances but in this setting this was 92/93 pts at best. Still, this was a wonderful experience.

TN: Medium intense nose with loads of spices and dried red fruit (I prefer fresher fruit). Better on the palate with spices, tar and roses, dreid red fruit and minerality. Good precision but medium complexity only. Melted tannins but still with good tension and a high freshness. Good, nicely creamy texture. Medium length.

Decanting: Double decanted 3 hours prior to drinking which helped to open the wine up.
