Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 1 note)

Tasted by Brian1970 on 3/2/2008 & rated 90 points: This dessert - a "sticky" as they apparently call them in Australia - is an attractive orange and caramel hue. The nose is a heady concoction of orange blossoms, apricots, honey, and a hint of petrol. It looks viscous when swirling, but tastes very light on its feet. The flavor profile is a one-trick pony - I'm buried under an avalanche of apricots. To be generous, there's also a slight orange peel twist, dipped in clover honey. The sweetness is light and refreshing, not cloying. That's a good thing, because the acidity is low - lower than I remember in the past. Finish is medium length. Unlike other fortified wines, I can easily enjoy a second glass. I've been a member of Kalyra's wine club for a year, and over that time, I've focused my subscription solely on their late harvest and fortified sweets, because they really are delicious values. Winery notes: For all those that love the dessert wines of Mike Brown, you are going to get a very pleasant surprise with this one-off production of this wine. This Orange Muscat is not a fortified wine like the other Muscats from Kalyra, but rather an example of late harvest Muscat. It is lower in alcohol but much bigger in flavor. This classic dessert wine is an explosion of flavor in your mouth. Expect rich, sweet apricot, peach, and a soft candy finish. On the nose, you will pick up some Orange blossom and apricot. This wine is richer than the usual Muscats, but for dessert wine lovers you will find it difficult to put down. Serve chilled and for the adventurous, mix with champagne for a new style Mimosa or pour over the top of your favorite vanilla ice cream. Only a small amount of this wine was produced.

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.

Experience Santa Ynez Valley Wineries (Santa Ynez Valley Wine Country)
Santa Maria and Santa Ynez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive, while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhone blends.
