"Genesis" is a clever name for the wines honoring the original plantings of Hogue Cellars in 1974. This Merlot is bargain priced between $10 to $15, even for currant vintages. Aging well at 12 years old, it remains opaque with no brown tone and still has a brightly fruity black cherry aroma. The mouth entry is well rounded, integrated, smoothly tannic, refreshingly acidic, and softly caressing. While not in the top tier of lush, rich, and powerful Merlots , it definitely remains a tasty and enjoyable introduction to the Hogue wines.

Popped and poured with dinner, finished off the next evening. Dark chocolate, black cherries, and a little cola on the nose. Same on the palate, with a bit of spice and vanilla woodiness coming out on day 2. Well-balanced, with firm tannins and decent acidity. Enjoyable, but a little short. Demoted a point because my wife didn't like it as well as I did.

Rich fruit on the nose. Ok. A little hollow on the mid palate. Nice finish. Solid.

Simple and easy drinking, but finish is a bit alcoholic.

Earthy with light fruit, supple tannins and a pleasing finish. A great bargain!
