  • Chicago Rotating Dinner Series - March 2014 (Aged Rioja) (Paris Club - Chicago, IL): Soft and elegant nose of red berries, some roasted nuts, and dried floral notes. Completely elegant and charming. Tons of floral elements on the palate too with some wet earthy notes and some pomegranate freshness. A great bottle of wine.

  • Glorious old Rioja that is quite structured and needed a good 2 hrs decanted to start showing itself. Then delicious tangy and very earthy cherry fruit is followed by delicate flavors of old leathers and spices. Still plenty of stuffing here although it smells and tastes much like an ethereal Burgundy. Fascinating to drink.

  • Would never have guessed the age of this blind. Still powerfully structured and while it would be hard to say it's youthful, it is certainly not showing its age. Dark red fruit, coffee, cumin, and other earthy notes. Very powerful and dense with a long finish. Would have liked to try this the next day if any had been left to see what might happen as the structure softened up a bit. Impressive.

  • Some golden oldies on a Tuesday night. (Il Corso.): This wine didn't move me as much as it moved others in the group. Some initial funk blew off to reveal a wine that's black-fruited in character with a strong iron component and dried herb and light tobacco notes. It's youthful with powerful structure and elevated acid levels. Indeed, that's my problem with the wine. I find the structure to be dominating the fruit, giving the wine a rather lean and ungenerous personality. The quail dish I had with it certainly helped to tame the structure a bit, but the fruit just isn't as upfront as it is in all the other Rioja this night. Low A-.
