Dark garnet with a thickish meniscus. Very complex nose: daisies, leather, humidor, mocha, seductive melange of berries. Perfect fruit on the palate -- delicious -- bright and ultra long finish. A very impressive wine at its peak.
San Diego WineSpectator.com Offline, 3/1/2013 (Sbicca Restaurant, Del Mar, California): Decanted. Clear medium garnet color. After three classic Bordeaux bottles showing their aristocratic restraint and sophistication, here was a wonderful example of New World exuberance. Initial whiff of dill, followed by a bonanza of tart cherries, cranberries, pomegranate, and currants in all their sun-drenched glory. Light oak. Full body, beautifully balanced, long finish.
Had I not known this was Silver Oak I would have thought I was drinking a fine vintage of Cos d'Estournel. INCREDIBLE. Truly as balanced, integrated, and stunning wine as I have had. The color belied its age and was consistent purple to the rim. Bold legs and tears. Herbal, peppery notes, reminiscent of Alexander valley and one of my favorite California appelations, with Aromas of tobacco, dark fruit, sour cherries, truffle, coca cola, just so much going on and all in balance like a fine symphony. The palate perfectly reflected the nose. If this is the way California wines were made back in the day I would still be drinking them. Superb after 25 years. Can't say enough. Actually youthful and could easily have another 5-10 years.
fully expected this to be over the hill as was the 87 napa that i drank a while back. instead, it was a pleasant surprise in that there was sufficient fruit remaining to enjoy the bottle. should have been consumed 5-6 years ago in a perfect world.
This wine still has the classic silver oak dill on the nose but also some funky (probably the oak) smells, which weren't a negative to me, as I found it adding to the complexity. The fruit was unexpectedly spicy with sour tones, which I also enjoyed. Good texture and mouth feel and a nice finish added to the experience.
