Dinner at Sun Wah (Chicago, IL): This is a really great example of the vintage and the commune. The fruit is crisp and crunchy, but there's a bit more darkness here than the crunch would indicate. There's good earthiness here too, and binding it all together is a nice touch of minerality and acidity. This is showing very nicely, with good freshness still, despite its being over a decade old.

Followed over a couple of nights, found it to be in a good place. A richer version of Burgundy for sure, but I thought that the oak was well integrated and added to the wine's complexity. Masculine and dark profile with good structure. Should get better.

A glorious and educational tasting of Swiss wines (Bern, Switzerland): Dusky and concentrated, Kistler-esque by comparison. This was pretty clearly the ringer. Black pepper and cola. Oaked and tannic. Somewhat heavy. It is interesting with a nice sweet and sour aspect, but it comes off as quite heavy handed and overdone relative to some of the other more elegant wines.

The same wine, not Vielles Viignes, but from another bottle was very good, 88. Nice fruit at the opening, with some tannic character to follow. Excellent with a game bird and mushrooms.
Lovely fruit and not much more at first, other than vanilla-oak. But there is more here, and it shows over a few hours. The wine never achieves a whole lot of complexity, but it tastes good, and shows some earthy and mineral character. Not a lot that says Gevrey either though. Tasty and satisfying wine, but doesn't capture what is exciting about Burgundy, to me - doesn;t have anything to say, really. And let's remember that it costs almost $50 - there are world class wines one can purchase for that price. A reminder to me that there just aren't many villages Burgundy wines that are worth the cost.
