A fairly deep colour; rich, opulent, strawberry/raspberry/plum fruit, full and dense, complex, savoury and with a very long finish. An excellent wine, now mature and probably at its peak.

Acker JK 51st birthday in NYC. Small glass quick note. Bright, brooding nose with black fruits and hummus, great concentration and depth of black fruit flavors, and very persistent, wrapped in a broad shouldered cloth. This is a powerful wine with years of life ahead. Majestic, but not as magical as the 95 tasted alongside.

Medium red browny rim; elegant notes, herbs, fresh light cherries; elegant attack, core of sweetness with prunes; fine balance between acidity and sweetness, mature wine; believe in its prime spot right now

Armand Rousseau Chambertin Dinner (State Street Manor - Chicago IL): Alongside the 2014. A big and concentrated vintage for Rousseau Chambertin, this is very rich with a powerful braised meat character along with black cherry and plum. More powerful than the 2014, but less elegant. So much here, even if not as perfectly harmonious as some vintages.

One of those lucky moments sat at one of my regular lunch spots during a boozy lunch the table next to us had this on the table. When they left the somm was so very kind to offer me a glass of what they had left in the bottle as he knows my affinity for those finer wines and curiosity to taste this. From prior experience with Rousseau 06 he did very well in that vintage. So of course the top dog doesn’t disappoint. The glass I had had received enough air and it showed nicely developed. Fine herbs Provençal, lingering minerals and beautiful Earl gray tea on the nose. The palate with roasted meat and a hint of cherry fruit. It certainly made the Trapet 09 Gevrey Ostrea that we had just had feel taste and smell like the poor man‘s Gevrey while this was reigning supreme.
It felt like the sample was fairly developed, also due to having been from a bottle that was opened a while before and this last bit having sat in the bottle getting lots of air. Based on this no crime to drink today but as Rousseau lovers will now the Cham does deserve 20-30 years, even in average vintages. A privilege to taste today.
