  • Pristine bottle, not decanted, opened on the spur of the moment, enjoyed over an hour. Tasted blind. Showing evolution on the nose but fresh and youthful on the palate, powerful for (what turned out to be) the vintage, leafy style, clearly Cabernet Franc dominated (a whopping 54% in this year), expressive of its terroir (I said "Pomerol or the north west corner of Saint-Emilion") cedar and gravel, masculine, still quite tannic, good drive and energy, light finish but very good length. At Bolomey Wine Import, Amsterdam, NL.

  • What a pleasant surprise. Spectacular nose of violet, a bit of herbs, wet stone and dark fruit. Plush, round and full in the mouth. Mature but still yourhful. Very open. Glossy texture and excellent balance. This is a sleeper and completely blew away the 2000 I had recently.

  • Tasted August 27, 2021, pleasantly surprisingly mature. Not a hint of excess structure or tanins. Lovely merlot characteristics. This is ready to drink and enjoy now. UNderrated.

  • Tasted blind, more evolved than I thought as my initial guess was an off vintage about 20 years old. Guessed 2002 northern médoc. It is medium bodied, round on the entry, a bit herbaceous , somewhat short on the finish, with angular tanins. A bit disjointed. I was quite disapointed when the bottle came out of its blind wrap. Not sure it will come together no matter how long it ages for.

  • 30 Vintages of Cheval Blanc: All tasted blind. 1982 to 2015 (with 1949 in the mix). The wines are fragrant, perfumed, seductive and always soft and without weight. Best performing vintages: the rather hot/ripe vintages 2015, 2009 and 1982 (all complex, seductive, complete and with elevated concentration). Next best: the promising and pure 2010, the still sexy 1990 and the immortal 1949. Notable outperformer: 2011 with many other good off-vintages. Notable underperformer: 2005, 2000, 1998 which all showed rather muted and not yet ready.

TN: Dark fruit, caramel, some herbs on the pleasing nose with medium+ intensity. Lots of mineral scents with crushed rock, gravels, earth and tree bark on the palate, a nice sweetness which, however, was not intense and present enough to make this a fully harmonious experience. Some coffee notes with some time. Good round structure, medium- length. Good but without any exceptionalism.
