Did not expect much from this wine and was impressed. This is a distant cousin in taste to hungarian dessert wine. Went down well with fresh blueberry pie.
We finished the night with carrot cupcakes from our bakery that really knows what they are doing. Paired pretty well with the 2007 Eisrebe. Not the best pairing I’ve done but, it did fit the bill.
This was a bottling I’ve overlooked for some time. While we loved Phelps wines, the Eisrebe was never going to stand above the many bottles of Sauternes we’ve had and collected. This is fine, just not outstanding which, is why we stopped taking in our club shipments and it’s persisted in my cabinets.
The nose reveals; marmalade, candied stone fruits, dry pineapple, lemon juice, oranges & tangerines, mixed nuts, toffee, honey notes, powdery, chalky limestone minerals, saline, yellow flowers and lilies.
The body is full, round, thick and waxy. The fruits are very sweet and candied...a little too sweet. marmalade, candied stone fruits, dry pineapple, lemon juice, lime zested candy, some grapefruit with sugar, oranges & tangerines, mixed nuts, toffee, beeswax, honey, caramel, corn syrup, powdery, chalky limestone minerals, saline, grainy volcanic minerals, yellow flowers and lilies. The acidity is round & quite excellent. The round, waxy, rich, lush, sweet finish is good and persists with great balance but, for me, a little too sweet.

Smelled like petrol and varnish. Purchased last month for an after-dinner Christmas treat and went right down the drain. :(

With a nose of honey and granny apples, this wine is wonderful!

Stunningly delicious at this age. Still vibrant with good acidity to offset the sweet. Wish I had more.
