(GIACOSA Barbera Falletto (white/ 1.5lt)) UPDATE: Notes From the Field A few observations from the field - One of the biggest surprises so far is the quality of the 2007 vintage in Germany and in Austria. I’ve already mentioned this but the freshness and reflection of terroir in the wines is fantastic. The 2006s continue to impress at the high end and with David Schildknecht's proclamation that the vintage is the equal of 2001 in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer that is about as high praise as can be. If 2006 is similar to 1976 or 1959 at the high end then 2007 has a lot of similarity to 1975. Lithe, terroir-infused vintages seem to be a fleeting proposition in Germany (2003, 2005, 2006 are all heavy vintages with little reflection at the Kabinett level) and 2007 represents a vintage the vintners are in love with - you can actually taste the vineyard differences. Think of this as the 2001 Burgundy vintage but in the Mosel. We have nothing to offer as of yet but many of the vintners know what they have so expect prices to be high this summer when many of the wines are released. Ditto for Austria where the vintage is being compared to a combination of 1999 and 1986. Where 2006 was very heavy with the emphasis on must-weight, 2007 is like a crystal ball of tensile spears waiting to shred your palate. Outstanding. More to come... - Jon Rimmerman ******************************** Giacosa Magnum DEAL Dear Friends, 2006 is shaping up to be another cracker vintage in Piedmont and if the quality of Giacosa’s Barbera is any indication - look out (although prices for the Barolos will be, how do I say, interesting). This special magnum is not even available in Italy (the listing you see in Italy is not this wine, it is a regular domestic magnum of Falletto), he only produced a few hundred of them and all went to foreign markets - it is a quasi-reserve of the regular Barbera Falletto and it is about as serious as Barbera gets. If you like toothy, intense and gravel-laden red wine, with a sultry, massive quality that is like a liquefied harmonic convergence, this wine would make for a special occasion magnum that does not require a second mortgage. Would be a great choice (if you can justify it) as a dinner party spectacle or for a large wine gathering - the quality is like a red label Barbaresco or Barolo but produced from his finest rows and lots of Barbera: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a relative value for a magnum of Giacosa We have a terrific price on this (what should be the lowest out there by a wide margin) - there are so few of these that you should be the only eonophile in your town to secure one. ONE SHIPMENT only directly from the source with perfect provenance (only 100 magnums for the entire US, most are for restaurants): 2006 Giacosa Barbera Falletto (special white reserve bottling) 1.5lt (this is NOT the same wine that Grandi Vini has - it is the same wine that Grapes N has for $159 on sale) EXTREMELY LIMITED Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy6166
