  • Gorgeous, old world style. All you could want from this wine.

  • Second last bottle. Better than the last one, but not as good as the one before that. Fruit is still present, as is the acidity. This one doesn't have the jarring sweetness that I found in some previous bottles. Instead, there's black licorice, black cherry, dried tobacco leaf, charred wood, and some savoury herb I can't put my finger on. Not quite sage, and not quite rosemary... Good stuff, but the tertiary notes are taking over and it's getting a little tired.

  • My previous bottles have been good to very good, but this one was a dumper. Too ripe, too stewed, too pruny.

  • This is the first time I've had to do a major rewrite of a TN after 24 hours. Here's my note on the first evening:

16 years later and Tanser's TN is still accurate. The nose is very good: cassis, tobacco and truffle, just like he said. Also a little too much alcohol heat on the nose. The palate doesn't quite live up to the nose. It's not particularly well balanced: all sweet fruit, oak, and green pepper. The acidity is still sufficient but fading, and the tannins are now fully resolved. A little astringent on the finish. 88 points.

And here's the update 24 hours later:

Hard to fathom how this has evolved over 24 hours. The fruit is still there, but the overt sweetness is gone. The oak and green pepper notes are gone. The fruit is now nicely balanced with tobacco and leather and a touch of cocoa. Tannins are fully resolved, with just a little dustiness on the finish. Without the sweetness, the acidity level seems just right. The finish lingers with the tangy fruit and tobacco notes. 92-93 points.

  • deep dark black-purple; effusive clean nose of tobacco, minerals, and black fruits; resid sugar and alcohol cloud the superlative olfactory start but still yet on balance a remarkable performance for a pinot specialist.
