Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 28 notes)

Tasted by Anonymous on 12/30/2009 & rated 87 points: Corks are fragile on these... had to use an Ah-So. Structure is smooth, well integrated tannins. Nose is a bit muted but shows some fruit. Palate is a bit too tart with a short finish. (171 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 12/30/2009 flawed bottle: Badly Corked. (196 views)
Tasted by bobbubbabs on 11/13/2009 flawed bottle: Yet another very disappointing show from an 1994 cali cab (joining Viader, among others). Cloying, sweet smell that refused to blowoff.

Always well stored. Drink 'em young or don't buy them. (412 views)
Tasted by N2Vin on 10/10/2009 & rated 95 points: Dinner With Bob and Pam White, Nancy Collins, and Friends (At Residence in Oakland Hills, CA): Classic wine. Mature nose of black berry, saddle leather, cassis, cigar box and toasted oak. Only slight bricking. Tasted mature and evolved, but right on target. Very nice mix of fruits, oak, leather, mocha and earthy herb notes. Very smooth and rounded. No harshness but mouthfilling cabernet with perfect balance. Very nice! (631 views)
Tasted by g-man on 10/8/2009 & rated 94 points: Was nervous when cork broke while opening. Happily this was a beautiful bottle that was well balance and had wonderful roast herbs, leather and anise on a lengthy palate and finish. This was my only botle and I'm glad I opened it now. I really don't see this getting better than where it is right now. (650 views)
Tasted by RoundersRob on 8/15/2009 & rated 94 points: As with all of the other bottles of Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon that I've had, this one was just as great as I was hoping for. Popped and poured at Berserkerfest in Napa Valley. Nice pencil lead, leather and cassis on the nose. Excellent structure and length with only a slight bit of tannin. Still retaining plenty of fruit. A wonderful wine that is just coming into its own. (889 views)
Tasted by Jack on 2/15/2009 & rated 92 points: Drink up. They will hold for a little while longer but won't get any better. (1138 views)
Tasted by khutch on 12/7/2008 & rated 88 points: (826 views)
Tasted by dcny on 9/21/2008 & rated 92 points: (849 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 3/31/2008 flawed bottle: a super dud. i agree with kevin's assessment that there were some distinct sherry notes, which i view as a flaw. (1711 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 3/31/2008 & rated 85 points: G7: Sherry, caramel, blackberry and tomato. Drying finish. Not a fan. (1694 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 3/16/2008 & rated 94 points: (1088 views)
Tasted by M DU VIN on 2/2/2008 & rated 92 points: (1181 views)
Tasted by Pseudonymously on 1/22/2008 & rated 87 points: Plenty of tannins still in this one. Scents of leather and darker fruits. (1744 views)
Tasted by GZ3 on 10/28/2007 & rated 84 points: past it's prime. scorched earth and a little thin. (1925 views)
Tasted by jcl5050 on 8/10/2007 & rated 95 points: I couldn't wait to open this bottle and I was truly impressed when I did. Beautiful aromas and packed full of fruit. Can't wait to try the 1997. (2051 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 12/29/2006: Impromptu drinking (Columbus, OH): Sweet, really appealing Cali Cab nose of dark fruits, cassis, and earth. Less forward and dense on the palate than the nose suggests, but a round, well-textured wine with good body and fine, well balanced tannins. Maybe some room for improvement but really good now. (2482 views)
Tasted by wequedad on 11/1/2006: Ready for Prime time. (2726 views)
Tasted by PatLee on 10/14/2006: Had with dinner of grilled porterhouse, baked potato, and green beans. Decanted for 1.5 hours before drinking. Color was nice purple with some rust color just starting to show. Deep, powerful nose with spices. Palette of black current with well integrated tannins. Finish with some dark cherry and nice acidity. Great balance for the meat and very, very enjoyable. This would last a while long, but it is drinking quite well today. (2755 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 9/5/2006: Mature reds and immature (mostly) whites; 9/5/2006-9/6/2006: Very good but not outstanding Cabernet. Showed a bit thin on stuffing for its tannins. Some good fruit, earth and herb flavors, but it had a very short finish. (2880 views)
Tasted by mappleton on 4/1/2006 & rated 95 points: From magnum at Joe's Stone Crab in Las Vegas. Absolutely wonderful. Drank side by side with the 1996 from magnum. I liked the 96, but the 94 reminded me all over again of why I love california cabernet. Sitll lots of life in both of these (3465 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 3/31/2006 & rated 90 points: Good rich wine... still possed lots of power and depth in finish. It has a full rich nose. Still good for a few more years. (3012 views)
Tasted by DRL01 on 3/24/2006 & rated 93 points: At times it was closed and at times it was rich, well balanced and seductive. Licorice, lead pencil, bitter roots, with some dark plum flavors. Full bodied but not heavy. (3240 views)
Tasted by Russell Faulkner on 2/23/2006 & rated 91 points: David Pope's Birthday Bash (Alba, London): Very dark and inky, broodying coffee, burnt caramel and tinned prune (in a good way). A little bitter but ripe at the same time, on palate it shows much more restraint than nose, very good. (3443 views)
Tasted by dgreg on 12/12/2005 & rated 92 points: Tasted this in a vertical with 1991-1994. The 91 & 92 were a little tart, the 93 was sensational. The 94 was great, but needs a little more time to age. If you've got it, hold off another year or two. (3310 views)

About red wine
Varietal character (Appellation America) [Requires a subscription payment for information.]
In the United States, "Wines with “estate bottled” designations must: a) also designate an appellation of origin or an AVA, and both the vineyards and the winery must be located there; b) the grapes must come from vineyards owned or controlled by the winery; and c) the wine must have been produced, from crush to bottle, in a continuous process without leaving the winery’s premises."

- WINE LABEL FAQS: A QUICK SUMMARY OF LABEL DESIGNATION RULES" by David E. Stoll
WineAmerica (National Association of American Wineries) | Free the Grapes!
California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
