Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.7 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 274 notes)

Tasted by McBenalds on 9/3/2010 & rated 90 points: As always, nice on the acid but with impressive depth for a Cotes du Rhone. Wish I had more of this--for the price, it's a steal. (225 views)
Tasted by RogerO on 9/2/2010 & rated 70 points: (221 views)
Tasted by Wblessing on 8/9/2010 & rated 88 points: (540 views)
Tasted by ViaDomitia on 8/2/2010 & rated 89 points: Cherries, cherries, cherries! Still full of life, not overly complex but great QPR. After a whole case, only one more to go. (872 views)
Tasted by khmark7 on 7/29/2010 & rated 87 points: Ripe bouquet and a nice light mouthfeel. Well balanced if not a little simple. Short finish. (807 views)
Tasted by smgood1 on 7/18/2010 & rated 90 points: Iron. Meatiness. Lots of black and red berries. Earth. Dried herbs. Mediumweight. Silky. Satisfying finish. Wonderfully round and balanced. (435 views)
Tasted by Lessthanzero on 7/9/2010 & rated 89 points: (728 views)
Tasted by xtian on 7/8/2010 & rated 85 points: (795 views)
Tasted by ghood on 7/7/2010 & rated 90 points: Drank a couple days ago, so no formal notes, but among the dozens of 2007 CDRs that I've consumed over the past year+, this continues to be one of the best and certainly one of the best values. Even better than it was upon last drinking, 6 months ago. (1029 views)
Tasted by JohnSh on 5/9/2010 flawed bottle: Bretty - not a nice palate here with very stripped flavours and way too much brett. (1564 views)
Tasted by envirovino on 5/4/2010 & rated 89 points: dark purple, smoke and tar on nose, maybe a hint of floral as others have noted, med body, balanced, consistent plumminess (?), nice finish, little spice and minor metallic notes; probably about as good as it gets for $14 (1705 views)
Tasted by pjb1955 on 5/2/2010 & rated 88 points: Took a little time to open up but was very nice after an hour. (1558 views)
Tasted by rwstorer on 4/28/2010 & rated 90 points: Boo Hoo - I'm so sad to come to the end of my four bottles. This is such an amazing BARGAIN! (1729 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 4/26/2010 & rated 91 points: This time there were no funky/reductive aromas and this bottle was my best to date. Very dark ruby-purple as usual. Remarkably improved nose with garrigue, violets, blackberries and black pepper. Mid+ bodied and round with silky tanins, opulent fruit and balancing acidity. Med+ finish. Extremely savoury and great QPR. (1812 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 4/25/2010 & rated 92 points: Paella, Cava and other Spanish Delights (Chez Christianne, San Francisco, CA): Opaque purple red violet color; pepper, tart red fruit, smoke, oak nose; tasty, tangy, tart black fruit, herbal, garrigue, anise palate; medium-plus finish (1839 views)
Tasted by dke on 4/23/2010 & rated 89 points: Tar, stems, iron and animals after opening, a little disjoined. After ~2 hours in a glass this really opens up and the nose fill up with more fruit, licorice, dust, smoke and leather. On the palate this has sweet dark fruit (cherries and prunes), leather and meat and only a bit of iron note. it finishes with good acidity, mild tannins and some tarry bitterness that provide a nice refreshment. Very dark and dense. Right out of the bottle 86-87, after it opens 89-90. This was excellent on the fourth night (under vacuvin), and showed more floral side on the nose and much more prominent tannins on the finish. (1718 views)
Tasted by mpricher on 4/21/2010 & rated 89 points: I am a Rhone Lover, so somewhat biased. Dark Color, nearly opaque. Day one lots of cherry ant Tar. Day two the fruit and floral character more prominent. Medium bodied, smooth, but a mouth coating plush feel. It overs lots of sour-patch Cherry. Some lighter tones of herb, but not overly green. Would buy again, and very food friendly!!! (1808 views)
Tasted by renoschmitt on 4/15/2010 & rated 88 points: (1533 views)
Tasted by pnwsun on 4/11/2010: was a little ragged at first but gathered its legs after about 30-45 minutes. [one person really liked it right after opening.] pretty smooth was light finish. (1927 views)
Tasted by Orneknalten on 4/10/2010 & rated 90 points: (1508 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 4/7/2010 & rated 90 points: Very dark ruby. Reductive aromas that fade away after aeration. Meat, berries, violets and some black pepper. Mid-full bodied and round with very soft tanins. rich fruit and balancing acidity. Fairly long finish. Close to its prime, has mellowed signifficantly since last tasting. (1985 views)
Tasted by Lessthanzero on 4/1/2010 & rated 88 points: Maybe it's April Fool's but although still quite acidic, this was almost devoid of barnyard after a 2 hour decant. Very pleasant, but not as disitinctive as earlier. This may also be starting its descent. (2015 views)
Tasted by Brownvino on 3/27/2010 & rated 89 points: (1629 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 3/22/2010 & rated 89 points: Violets, boiled purple plums, nori, a bit of dark spinach and a wet marble, polished concrete minerality. Not what I remembered it as being. (2206 views)
Tasted by Rossodio on 3/13/2010 & rated 93 points: (1333 views)

Professional 'Channels'

Garagiste (8/25/2008)
(ST. COSME Cotes du Rhone) Party

Dear Friends,

I'm going to go overboard below so I'm warning you in advance - I can also tell you the verbose comments are not marketing speak - the wine is so good for the tarriff that it's almost like fake wine (it isn't). This is probably a bit too much hoopla for a Monday, but it was now or never. If Cote Rotie prices have you in a funk, you may want to pay special attention here...

You always ask me for large format at cheap prices (for the holidays or other) but magnums of quality just do not come in the $25-30 range. I've found a few lately (the Morgante was one) but the exchange rate has made it almost impossible. Magnums can cost twice as much to ship as 750mls from Europe so the wine has to be really worth it to bother - in this case, the wine itself is so good the price is almost irrelevant.

In brief, the 2007 vintage in the Rhone and Provence was fantastic in certain sub-zones (especially the Syrah-based wines and the whites) - the vintage was completely the opposite of Bordeaux and the long, warm, even growing season produced fragrant and spice-laden wines that will really spin your head (a la Linda Blair). I've found one laugh out loud example after another but this is one of the best for the price - it really knocked me for a loop . Maybe I was seduced by the hot fermentation and massive extract but in a party setting or at a dinner where old and new-world need to mingle side by side, you can indeed have both - the 2007 St. Cosme Cotes du Rhone. As good as it is in 750ml, it's even better in magnum (I've tried both).

Once people taste this wine, it is going to be requested at every local wine shop in the country - it's just too good for the price. You will see a plethora of 750s out there but not the magnums. This is a special run of large format that they've agreed to bottle for us from their best material and the wine inside is "get out of the way" good. It is so dense, deep-toned, purple and tooth staining that the phrase Cotes du Rhone really doesn't apply here - it's more like 100% Syrah Hermitage jr with a modern twist (although there is no oak). For the tarriff, this represents one of the finest buys of the season, especially with such a Syrah-heavy example. Yes, you can buy two 750mls for less than this (we had them for less - they are sold out) but the magnums are so much fun and the juice inside is the deepest they had in 2007 (which is scary).

I generally try not to push you into acquiring too much of one item (I believe spreading your purchases around makes sense) but I'm fairly sure this is one of those wines you are going to wish you had in reserve - waiting to titillate those that partake of your generosity. I'm probably going overboard regarding a wine at this price level but I can't imagine another quasi-bargain magnum that would be more appealing to a wide range of tasters. In addition, I don't think this has been reviewed yet but that's probably a good thing (or availability would be even tighter). I'm sure you can find other opinions out there that will sing the same song as I am, so do whatever research you need to...

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - VERY RARE IN MAGNUM (only one run of magnums available - they are already sold out of the 2007)

2007 St. Cosme Cotes du Rhone 1.5lt

Thank you,

Jon Rimmerman
