  • Huet-A-Thon (Bay Area Edition): The nose is subtle, with some mix of citrus, apricot, and honey. The palate is rather restrained, polished with a well integrated acidity that makes the wine feel more off-dry than a proper dessert wine. There is a pleasing bitterness and sourness, like orange marmalade, mixed in with a complex salinity that reminds me of quinine (club soda) on the finish. There was a raging debate whether this is a true Constance since it was later labeled a Le Haut Lieu Moelleux 1er Trie. Definitely not as intense as the ‘95, but very satisfying in its own, slightly schizophrenic way, oscillating somewhere between sweet and savory. It actually reminds me of a ‘94 de Fargues Sauternes I had once, which had a similar saline, orange marmalade, off-dry quality to it.

  • Pairing this is a tricky one. I'd say my last note is relatively on point, but with a moderately sweet pudding, this felt a bit dry and the plums went in a fresh and sour direction. Better with savoury dishes at this point in its life.

  • Unique and captivating, it's interesting to learn the history of this wine. Certainly a bit odd at first, it sort of wavers between a rich sherry and an off-dry Chenin. Dark amber colour, there are sweet roasted nuts, dried figs, mirabelles, and bee pollen. Unctuous and dense, the sweet/savoury counterplay was a phenomenal pairing with lobster bisque.

  • This is a rarity (apparently released in UK, then domaine decided not Constance quality, so rest released as Le Haut Lieu 1er Trie). Thought a good fit for a crowd of Loire fans. Definitely not the richness/sweetness of other Constances, but very tasty- electric acids, honey and lemon, flower and soil notes. Very fun. B+/A-

  • So, this doesn't really exist. Apparently Huet released a batch to English market, and then decided it didn't meet Constance standards, so since then it has been released as Le Haut Lieu Moelleux 1er Trie. But I got this oddity, and am pleased that I did -even sub-standard Constance is serious stuff. Ringing acids, deep flavors of citrus zest, honey, and toffee, not super sweet but really vibrant. A-
