Last night we did a JohnX 2000 on the terras while eating a lamb filet. Beautifull April night. Out of the cellar @ 14 degrees and my last one. Oh hell why my last one!. Why did I not buy 36 of these. 11 years of rest did this one right. Vanillla and Cassis on the nose. The first sip reminded me of a Pavie 1999. The same clarity and purity. Dark fruit. Cassis and Cherries. Velvety. It blew me away. My wife as well. All the others I opened up WAY to early. Followers of JohnX please be PATIENT. You will not regret it. These wines need time. It says so on the back of the bottle. 10-15 years. We have had some serious bottles during the years, this one really stood out..Very memorable.

Forward cherry, raspberry and sage aromas. Fruity palate of further cherry with an addition of caramel, asphalt, mint and mocha. Took a while to open up, but after 2 hours it really shined and relaxed. Very smooth finish with clean spice.

Slightly disappointing for the price though v. enjoyable. Hadn't really developed since the last bottle.

A vertical of John X Merriman with Adi Badenhorst, Rustenberg's winemaker (LIWSF, London): 2000 was apparently a difficult vintage. There is meaty black fruit on the nose, together with some cheesiness. It has fresher, more distinct fruit flavours than the 1999. All in all, it feels very young still and needs time to integrate more.
