Seems that many 2000 Bordeaux's are just singing right now, and I've noticed this to be especially true with top-tier Pessac-Leognan.

The 2000 Haut-Bergey is no exception, and surprisingly won the night for me, over a 2005 Branaire Ducru and a 1998 La Gaffeliere.

Color - Garnet, with a slightly lighter rim. Lively, but age is starting to show.

On the nose - Gorgeous notes of wild mushrooms, game, tobacco, espresso and earth, with lovely herbaceous aromas and a hint of leather. Secondary and tertiary notes, with great complexity and expressiveness.

In the mouth - Medium bodied, round, beautifully integrated. Lovely minerality at the core, supporting layers of lush dark fruit and a delicious, complex finish.

A beautiful wine, and it's apogee.
92+ points on the night. Drink now, no point in waiting.

  • Opened last night and the nose was a little funky to start; some people said baby diaper, but it was Frenchy for sure. Notes of leather soon followed. It became drinkable after an hour and after 3 hours I took it to Italian dinner. It opened up even better and popped with food. Don't wait too much longer so go for it.

  • Gently decanted. Aromas show brambly notes, leather, earth, a little cedar, touches of mushroom, spice, sous bois. Juicy, fleshy, again brambly fruit with a little sour plum & mint and those tertiary notes in support. Tannins are not as coarse as I remember them but that may be the rack of lamb that assists with this. Pleasant.
