The 1961 Smith Haut Lafitte shows a slightly stern nose though it's fresh and clear with a red-fruited personality, accented by a touch of green peppercorn and chive. More red cherry follows on the palate with cooked portobello and dark earth alongside, expanding and in contrast to the attenuated nose. There's still a little grippy tannin here, transitioning to a loamy, slightly mentholated finish. Complex, mature, and characterful, enjoyable in its way if not with the usual 1961 panache.
