  • From a good looking bottle. Nose has sour cherry, game, musk, tart and acid. Palate is tart with sour red cherries, iron and some blood. The fruit is lean showing the vintage, showing some greenness in both the nose and palate. Drink up.

  • Holiday dinner organized by Ken Brown with many great wines! (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): I have not had much Ponsot. Maybe this was my first experience? I honestly cannot recall. But I will not soon forget how darn delicious this wine was. Candidate for wine of the evening in very tough competition. Gorgeous? Yes. Palate enveloping (not staining). It was subtle and glorious at once. Opulent, deep, and long. Tertiary but hardly leafy or tired. Indeed, far more youthful than its 30 year age. Bravo to Ponsot. And not a Rudy fake!

  • Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red center with tan rims. The high intensity nose displayed black cherries, brown sugar, cassis, and some almonds.

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with great richness and length. It had moderate tannins and great fine-grained precession. Its only flaw was that the tannins were a bit dry on the finish.

It is possible the fruit will outlive the tannins here which would elevate this wine into even more rarefied territory. However, my guess is that it is better to drink this now with food.

This was a surprisingly impressive bottle for the vintage!

  • Second bottle from auction cache, very wet cork, intact. This nose was funkier, a bit of iodine, and after a decision to decant, settled down. But the palate was quite healthy, and gaining complexity as it stretched out in the glass. Again the cherry spice profile came through, with an amazing lift that lasted seemingly minutes on the finish. Long - intense and very possibly weightless! Brilliant after 90 minutes.

  • Auction bottle, held a few months. Firm cork, wet up to the top. Gorgeous pale red color, orange rim. Sweet cherry blossom and truffly nose confirmed on palate. Lush, with an expansive, voluminous soft mouth. Long and vibrant. Can't get over the cherry fruit still dominating the profile even after an hour in bottle. Lovely Grand Cru.
