| Community Tasting Notes (average 86.7 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 28 notes) | | | Tasted by Red Red Vine on 10/31/2009 & rated 83 points: This wine is absolutely worth its purchase price, and more. Round, smooth, and with the right blend of fruit and spice, a really lovely choice for a casual evening. (558 views) | | | Tasted by wade on 10/31/2009 & rated 90 points: Someone said clumsy. Hmmm. I disagree. I stand by the flavor profile of raspberry and cherry reduction with pumpkin pie spice. Not common flavors, and to some that might seem clumsy. I'm buying still more. Plummy and harsh, licorice finish, seems like its trying too hard ... definitely drinkable but not something I'd buy. (1065 views) | | | Tasted by wilmette vino on 7/16/2009 & rated 84 points: a bit clumsy and jammy - lots of dark red fruit but not balanced with acidity and tannin. ok, but no need to repeat. (1073 views) | | | Tasted by Richard Jennings on 6/13/2009 & rated 91 points: Very dark cherry red color; fig, black fruit and bramble nose; tasty, tart berry, black fruit, sage and mineral palate; medium finish 91+ pts. (1236 views) | | | Tasted by wade on 6/2/2009 & rated 90 points: I've continued to add to my holding of this wine, and every time I drink it I wonder why I mess with any other wine at this price point. I guess the answer is I love variety, but I'm telling you this wine ROCKS at this price. Its not funky, mineral, its not currant and plum, its not this or that. It is yummy. I think I put some flavors down in a previous note, and I'm sure others have put some nice notes of what their impressions of taste and smell. They are right, I'm sure. This is a great sub$10 wine, period. I'm going to reload my cellar with more. (1352 views) | | | Tasted by sayward on 4/26/2009 & rated 88 points: this wine was cheap in value, but i was very impressed with it. perhaps it was the weather, but the wine was fruity and reasonably dark. not too dark. this wine is 100% grenache, but excellent for red wine lovers who drink wine in the summer. i really enjoyed this wine and for the price of $9.00 it was EXCELLENT! (1551 views) | | | Tasted by feilb on 4/24/2009 & rated 87 points: Great QPR, this wine, being grenache based, is very fruit forward with big raspberries and cherries. As was mentioned, this is not a complex wine, but it is a great drinker and probably one of the best sub $10 wines out there. Not a profound wine but very enjoyable. (1824 views) | | | Tasted by rumpole on 3/10/2009 & rated 84 points: Relatively good ripe fruit fell apart to a kool-aid like mess fairly quickly. Drink it fast. (1931 views) | | | Tasted by Wineholio on 3/5/2009 & rated 85 points: Not sure how people are rating this a '90". Certainly not bad for an $8 bottle of wine. Better than "Two Buck Chuck" but to be honest this wine is definitely not great. High acidity, granular, not integrated and lots of HOT alcohol on the nose, in the glass and in the mouth, seemingly disconnected from the body of the wine. (2022 views) | | | Tasted by Grape_ape on 2/16/2009 & rated 85 points: wouldn't re buy....too tart (1981 views) | | | Tasted by RudyTinto on 2/13/2009 & rated 89 points: (1698 views) | | | Tasted by Falco203 on 2/8/2009 & rated 90 points: OK, let's be clear. I have been drinking wine for 26 of my 46 years, well maybe a little longer. This bottle is simply the best sub $10 wine I have drank in my life. It is not because it is freakishly complex with strong nose and a hint of this and that. It is simply because it is a good drinker. It is 100% Grenache grape, I don't even like Grenache. Monte Oton is vinified from grapes grown in rich volcanic soil. The result is a hearty, ripe, and textured wine with loads of blackberry, raspberry, and plum fruit. Product of Spain Alcohol by Volume: 14.5% . I have found it listed online for as low as $6.52 per bottle. Own this wine!!!!!!!! (2081 views) | | | Tasted by wade on 2/6/2009 & rated 89 points: Cherry and raspberry on the nose. Tasted like cherry reduction sauce with pumpkin pie spice, nice structure, some nice tar notes. Nice every day $9 wine! I love grenache. (2043 views) | | | Tasted by pete s. on 1/30/2009 & rated 86 points: Big fake fruit going on here but enjoyable. Light to medium bodied. Nice acidity and tannins on the finish. Not bad for the price. (1996 views) | | | Tasted by mstrickland on 1/23/2009 & rated 72 points: Not liking this one much at all. Enjoy the winery and their budget wines, but the Tres Picos and the Garnacha are far better (2007 views) | | | Tasted by rcmcb on 1/16/2009 & rated 89 points: Split with a friend on a Friday afternoon. Juicy, chewy tannins, spicy finish (though not as long as I would have liked, but we're talking about $9 here). Delicious Spanish Grenache, which earned an extra point for what it offered at its price point! Good QPR. Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net
Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos and Amontillados. But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
