  • Dried roses and crushed cherries, fruit is quite vibrant for the age. Dried herbs rosemary menthol and porcini. Bright acidity and soft but present tannins. Can hold for another 5+yrs.

  • I was looking for something last night that had been properly stood up, and this OWC six pack caught my eye -- I had bought at a low price at an auction in 2009 (I had some angst then that I had largely stood on the sidelines for this important vintage) and Galloni had given a positive writeup in the past few years. Double decanted about 6-7 hours in advance of drinking. Color was very correct, red with a bit of bricking. Good clarity. Bouquet was exquisite -- fresh, steely iron tailings and saline minerality (the non-oxidized iron of Serralunga, as compared to Bussia). Absolutely captivating. On the palate the wine was balanced, the fruit was sweet, the tannins well resolved, came across as quite fresh for a wine of this age. But the wine lacked a depth that I'd expect of the vintage and the terroir. I wouldn't say it was polished, I didn't detect any overt wood notes, I just felt that there was depth, some Oomph! that was lacking, particularly given the enhanced expectations created by the bouquet. Not sure how this wine was being made then, but a somewhat mixed experience. Perfectly good bottle of wine, I might guess a 2004 vintage if it were served blind, but failed to scale the heights of this more substantial vintage.

  • Italian Retrospective at the Texas Wine School. Decanted for about an hour. Medium ruby-garnet, with some brown hues on the rim. The nose is clean and quite complex, with ripe black cherry, forest floor, tobacco developing into coffee, tea, tar, dried herbs. The palate is consistent with the nose, but even more vibrant, with nice ripe fruit, medium (+) acidity, medium (+) alcohol (14% but seems lower) and medium (+), silky tannins. Full-bodied and rich, but in a very understated way, this wine has aged only incrementally in the last year. It is still in a fine drinking window, promising at least a couple more years of peak enjoyment.

  • 4thWednesdays - Giorgio & Paulo's Italian Wine Extravaganza - Feb 2018 (Texas Wine School, Houston, Tx): A: Pale garnet headed towards brown
N: Vanilla, tart cherry, strawberry, rose, prune, tar, clove, caramel. Medium (+) intensity and fully developed
P: Aromas confirmed. Dry, medium (+) acid, medium (+) ripe tannin, full body, medium (+) intensity, medium (+) alcohol and finish.
C: This is from the eastside of the Barolo producing region and therefore well structured. I think the Quality is Outstanding but Drink up as this will begin its decline soon. One hour later .......florals have blown off but still tasty. Went wonderfully with the truffle oil on Robert's Orzo.

  • KOV Silent Auction Big Reds of Italy Class. Decanted for about an hour, this 20+ year-old Nebbiolo was delicious. Medium ruby-garnet, with some brown hues on the rim. The nose is clean and quite complex, with ripe black cherry, dried violets, licorice, tobacco, The palate is consistent with the nose, but even more vibrant, with nice ripe fruit, medium to medium (+) acidity, medium (+) alcohol (14% but seems lower) and medium (+), silky tannins. This very balanced wine, from a classic vintage, is drinking really well, with several years of drinkability left. The balance between the fruit and structure, 20 years out, is a thing of beauty.
